Buy rebuilt 727 or get it done myself?

There is a local guy with a rebuilt 727 he bought second hand with a built 440 and he also has a few mopars from what I can tell. Wondering if I should go this route or take no risks and get a used 727 for $300 and get it rebuilt? He has no details on the build.
 
Get yourself a service manual for the transmission & a quality complete parts kit & do it yourself. You will most likely end up with a much better built unit & the satisfaction that you built it.
 
Used for $300..get him to stand by it...install immediately and return if not what you want
 
Depends on the price of the "rebuilt" one. If it's close to what the used one costs, I'd be tempted to take a flyer on it. If it's considerably more, I'd just rebuild the used one- then you'll have one in a known condition. Even if it was rebuilt, you don't know how well it was done or how it was treated. Just remember, without receipts or other proof of rebuilding, they're both just cores.
 
I'm so tired of hearing about, "Good quality complete rebuild kits"....they do not exist anywhere...Somebody thinks there are "no risks" in having a transmission rebuilt? AND others are recommending installing a used trans, then removing it and trying to get it backed up with a warranty, when the cost of the trans is half what shops charge to R&R a trans? You need to realize, first of all, that you are entering into a complicated endeavor. Step #1: What is the PK number on the trans? Good, now we're about 1/1000 of the way there.

The OP was asking what he should do...looks like my recommendation was not clear-a hack job if you will. I think he should get a rebuilt transmission; or get the transmission he's looking at rebuilt. In that regard, I referenced a local guy who I've had good experience with. Free shipping sounds nice, but the closest he'll get to it would be getting the work done locally.
 

Dude! Be a 'stand up' sorta guy and tackle that simple mechanical device yourself. Don't let a buncha shills convince you to spend big bucks on over-priced labor, expensive un-needed internal trinkets, and shipping out the wazoo! It's justa 727 fer chrissake! So simple even a cave man could do it! (I sure do hope I haven't offended anyone)...

I have some cores on hand.. only about 150 or so 727, 904, 46/47/48RE and 68RFE.
