For the sake of conversation ,I know I should talk to a Cam vendor for this info but curious what hydraulic cam would work well with this set up. Just a driver some street some highway. Anyone run something similar to what I have ? Or want to share some knowledge of what would perform well with the desciption below ? I love a little lump in a cam but performance is key for me .Here's what I have.

1968 Dart Convertable


1968 340 20 over KB Hyper Pistons about 10.5 to 1 Comp (160 psi compression)

Eddy 60179 65cc Alum. Heads no porting springs that came with heads , Stock Hydraulic Rockers (Would consider some 273 adj. rockers if lift would be an issue)

Current stock cam. Stock intake 6oo Eddy carb , Stock crank ,

Installing Eddy Airgap Intake. Have a Eddy 650 Thunder carb mechanical secondaries.

Or could go with a 750 Holley vac secondaries as an option .

Stock Dizzy with Limiter plate 16’ Initial, 36 total , 53’ with Vac can . MSD blaster 2 coil,

Stock ECU Older Orange box.

Stock 4 spd. (Someday would love to install a Gear Vendor unit.) ( Maybe 391 gear if I get the OD Unit but probably just dreaming )

Stock Exhaust Manifold with 2 ½ front to back with X-pipe, Walker Quiet flow SS Mufflers (Really don’t want headers)

8 ¾ rear 323 gear

Manual Brake KH front 10” rear drum.

Rear Tire 235/60/15

Front tire 205/70/14

160 PSI. That's pretty dang good. Going with more cam will only lower it, most likely. What cam does it have now?
 
...and why talk to a cam "vendor"? All they'll wanna do is sell you something. You need to do what you're doing. Talk to people who've nothing to gain.
 
You mentioned “stock cam” being a 68 and a 4 spd is that the auto or the 4spd cam?
 
Ok. I missed "stock cam". My bad.

You know, with all the rest of that combo, I REALLY think you probably have the best all around camshaft in it right now. You have ignition, intake and carburetor upgrades. Unless you maybe put headers on it, I'm not sure I'd touch the cam. Don't know if I'd do it then.

All this said assuming it IS the 68 4 speed cam. That was a great grind.
 

Here's the biggest question. Are you HAPPY with it?
 
Right now the issue may be more what you are able to find. Almost all cams are currently out of stock, apparently due to a core shortage.

Was talking with Isky last couple days for a custom cam and they said atm they have no cores for Sb Chrysler, and mentioned it was the same for Sb Chevy (if I heard correctly) Must be pretty bad
 
When I bought the car in 1985 with 100K on it with a fresh valve job I was told it was the original cam but thats all I know. Car was an original 340 4spd GTS .I then put another 100K on it! I had new Cam bearings installed by machine shop, cylinders bored and hone fitted. I micced the cam lobes and all lobes were very consistant so I used it with a fresh set of lifters . One head had a crack that's why I went with the Eddy's . I put it together myself but didn't aknowledged the Lighter pistons so I pulled the crank and had some weight taken off the crank after the fact Thanks to a Fabo member who calulated how much to remove . She runs real smooth. I'm still fighting a terrible stumble off the line. Have to drive with the choke 1/2 on until it's totally warmed up but still have a light stunble. Rebuilt original carb and a 600 Eddy still the same. No Vacuum leak 15 Inches at idle.Thinking its ignition but still can't figure it out yet. I'll save that for another post when I wave the white flag lol.
Just kinda haunts me that I'm using a 200K cam.
 
The mileage on the cam is irrelevant. As long as it measured good, that's all that matters. It's not the cam that's causing your stumble, so get that out of your mind IF that's where you're going. WHERE do you have initial timing set? Also, you say it runs better with the choke on some. There' a lean condition right there. That could be your stumble. I'd investigate more there.

I'd also get some good rockers and lose the hydraulic cam. I'd use a Comp Cams 282S or something similar.

I'd endorse that if he had headers. The split pattern of the factory 4 speed cam will work better with manifolds, IMO.
 
Yes on lean, I've been messing around with springs and metering rods. Also bought the better 1468 accelerator pump tried the linkage settings too. Now with winter I'm starting over a bit. In the spring adding the Eddy air gap with 650 Thunder, Went through my MP dizzy with limiter plate and new Reluctor cap and rotor . My gut tells me a Vac leak but can't find one. Timing was at 10 Initial now set up for 18 Initial 36 total not installed yet so with Vac around 54' Still have to test the curve ect : 18 might be a little high imo.

Timing sounds about right now. What's a vacuum gauge say?
 
Currently 14 -15" but still haven't installed the upgraded dizzy yet. Cars outside covered right now . Waiting for a mild day to install and test.

Yep...cores are GOLD right now. Last time I talked to Howards about 6 weeks ago they said they had cores. Today, maybe not.
 
:popcorn: When and if you pull that cam, there's a bunch of us that would like to know if it's the original '68 4 speed cam.:popcorn:
 
Yes me included. The guy I bought it from told me he was keeping it as original as possible. Gave me a big Dealers part# book with the car. The car literally had 2' high weeds inside the car growing up through the floor boards.

I just read something from Rehrenberg about those cams. Everyone who's been into these motors has heard the legendary stories behind the cams performance. From the little blurb in the article not all '68 340's with 4 speeds received these cams. Supposedly only used in the earlier to mid-year '68 340 4 speeds. Is your car an earlier build?
