The ports on the air gap are too big for "little" 318 ports...your much better off with the performer for the "little" ports..

Ah come on, havent we gotten past this 318 hating yet? They are all real motors; all have their benefits and disadvatages.
Now now, lets not get stupid here or else I'll have to start doing my job. Please don't make me work.

I agree, Rumble....it is uncalled for. Hopefully, he was just joking about the 318 not being a real motor, like a 360. We should be respectful of what everyone has and not say that one is better than the other (at least not in a degrading way).
Now if it was a joke, then no biggie......

so if i go to diff gears what whould b the best,and what year can i get the 8 3/4 rear end? like i said i dont want an all out race car just something kids can watch at track,i just wanna get little more power out off it,i took out powerstering,wipermotor,heater ****,all int out have two seats in it rest is gone,trying to take much weight out as can.I wanted to run exhaust out side of car, will that change anything?right now it comes off header into h pipe then muff then straight threw,i wanted to stay with same size is now just cut it off before wheel
You can get any ratio for the 8-3/4 practicalllly.
Do you NEED this car to drive the Hwy. far or for a long time?
A great street strip gear would be a 3.91 or 4.10
For the Hwy. and decent performance, 3.21 or 3.55.
Alot is dependent on how far you wanna go with it. What's good for you.

I wouldn't waste time or cash on the 8 1/4. You can, to answer the question. but the gear selection is less, the cost is the same, you still need a sure grip unit, an dwhen you're done, it's still a weak 8 1/4. Fine for stock stuff, but it's working awefully hard to stay together on a car that's raced regularly.

ok thanx just picked up the 8 3/4 center section 742 case newer posi richmond 3.91 gears this morn.This week i wanted to give her a tune up(wires,spark plugs,cap etc) what whould b the best combo to get?

Yea ask him for the #'s, or look on the back side of cam, obviously you will have to pull soft plug out and engine. #'s will be stamped on the back of cam

Try stock plugs and a good set of aftermarket wires, (MSD is very good) standard or MoPar brand cap and rotor. That'll be all you need.

Honestly? Trial and error. Read product reviews on the popular performance parts websites, and just give 'em a shot. Guys on here are running all sorts of different brand names with all sorts of different results. Me, auto-parts-store cap and rotor, NGK V-power spark plugs (just an experiment, not the holy grail), and MSD wires. Give the carb a good look too.

k thanx, when i try to powerbrake it the car dies.My question is ys it stalling? ive been thinking just pull motor over winter an rebuild her,as stated before the guy who owned it before me said engine was rebuilt.I found lil things here an there on the motor that thinks he just slaped it together(leaks oil from valve covers,an leaks at one of the headers)or rebuild top end with motor in car.

The first thing to realize is the car is a system. A small part of that is the drivetrain, a small part of that is the carb and tuneup. Break it doen into small parts, and look at each one, and you may find it's much less costly to focus on small, rather than large. An engine stalling is out of tune, or damaged. So try to tune it. If you are new to the old car game, I'd suggest reading up on HOW everything works, and not by asking questions of an open audience. Many people mean well, but IMO too many cooks spoil the soup, and don't really help you get better at the job at hand. new doesnt always mena good, and running rarely means running good. So keep after it, and go find some articles on tuning the carb and timing curve.
