I have a chance of buying a really cheap motor/trans. combo. He say's it's a 318 4 speed out of a Dodge D-100 truck. I looked up some info. According to what I could find they didn't put 318's in that year. They put 360's. And I couldn't find any info on the 4 speed. They all were automatics. I guess. Does anyone know what 4 speed this may be???? Thanks. Oh, 1973!!!! I guess that would have been helpful.

I've seen allot of D-100's have 318's in them. No 4 spds. though but that don't mean they didn't' make them.

As Max asked what year are you talking??

I think they built them with the 833 OD trans. You see references to the "Truck" OD trans all of the time. I've got one of the transmissions sitting in my shop.

I had a 78 D100 with a 318 and four speed. The trans was that granny low NV3500 or something, HUGE and HEAVY. It was a truck trans.

My Dad had a 77 D100 with a 318 two barrel and a four speed. I don't remember which tranny but it was a cast tranny with the low granny gear. 1:1 high.

I recently bought a 360 with a 4 speed that the seller says is from a 1976 truck. The trans is an overdrive and wont work in an a-body.

If it is a '73 with a 4 speed, it has to be the granny gear truck transmission. The OD 4 speed didn't come along until '76. And yes, the 318/granny combo was available in trucks at least until '79 because I was looking at one to buy that year. Easiest way to tell is to look at the shifter. If it is built into the top of the transmission, it's a granny truck.

Well, basically, you just pull the trans, bell housing, clutch/flywheel/linkage and shifter out of the car and then install your flexplate/convertor/auto trans/shifter and kickdown linkage. You will also need to run a trans cooler.

do i have to buy an aftermarket radiator with the trans cooler adaptor or can i run a universal parallel with the stock one

I would probably buy something like this:

and a nice trans temp guage like one of these:

And if the trans is not running as cool as it should, then you could add an aftermarket trans cooler like this:

They appear to be very well made.
When installing an external trans cooler, I think it is supposed to be plumbed into the return line going back to the trans.
