Change rear end length ?

Hello.
I have a chance to get an 8 3/4 or 9 1/4 rear end for my 71 Scamp. Both are too long. Can I cut and re-weld housing and order new axles?
Is there a better / cleaner approach to this? I have no experience with this type of modification. My welding skills would have to improve quite a bit before I attempt.

Any thoughts appreciated.

It`s done all the time, invest in an alignment jig or just have a pro shop do it.

I did a dana 60 for my 71 dart. I ordered axles from Dr. Diff. i used the longer/shorter axles from him. I asked him before if he could do a 9 1/4 axles. he said yes but they were a couple hundred more, I think. my longer/shorter were 342 to the door. keep in mind that if you decide to do equal length axles, I think they are considered custom length and are more money. contact Dr. Diff to see.

Thanks for responses. I was just looking at some Dr Diff stuff. Seems more doable as I dig into it.

An 8.75 will have equal length axles for proper pinion location
Dana 60 will have a long/short axle.

If you go to Dr Diff, Cass is awesome and will get you set up right the first time.

I would not use a corporate 9.25 rear axle.

Turn the axle, if the other side turns the same way, it is.

I like to commit to wheel size before narrowing the diff.

If a mini tub is in your future, or something like that.

Happy to help you do the job but you would have to drive it north for a few hours. I have a jig.

I have a bit of planning to do and then change that plan a few times, before I do any cutting.
Also working out the engine build.
And trying to convert a barn into some sort of a shop before winter...
