I just had a question, how much oil do I need to buy? Ha ha, I looked through my service manual but couldn't find anything listing the actual amount needed, just recommending how to do it and the grades to use.

And help would be appreciated

1965 Dodge Dart GT 273 2bbl

5 quarts with a new filter. Buy an extra just in case.

put in 4 3/4, run it for a second, let it drain back for a second and check and top off as needed.

I usually by a case but I try to change the oil in my van at the same time, and it uses the same amount. leaves usually a quart or two left over for topping off cause they are both leakers haha.

Any frost in Fresno? Im south in Tustin but would recommend any multi viscosity oil that is prior to API-SM (made for roller cammed very modern tight tolerance motors) such as "high mileage oil" or other. If you were still running a solid 273, I would recommend Valvoline VR-1 or "Classic Car Motor Oil" as both have ZDP in the proper amounts for solid cam lifters. Rotella and Diesel truck oils are also supposed to have high levels of zinc as they are not CAFE regulated as hard as Automotive oil.

Cory, your service manual will have a section in there called "Capacities." It's in there, trust me. :-D

Too bad the diesel motor oils nowdays don't have much zinc. If you use a plain old oil you can use a additive like Isky's ZDDP. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ISK-ZDDP/

Rotella by Shell is what I use in my cars. It has the zinc in it and the car runs alot better and the oil helps seal up leaks
