It's too bad, like it or not, the Volt is cutting edge technology. Unfortunately, it's timing couldn't have been worse, and as we all know timing is everything.

Another fact that plagues the Volt is, it's not yet ready for prime time.

Some further development is still needed, and forcing the situation, could cut like a double edged sward. That is to say that forcing it into use will inevitably result in a better product, but could/will put a bad taste in people's mouths for "plugins" over Hybrids, if it experiences even the slightest failures or setbacks.

If it doesn't do well, it will go in the same direction as the old Honda Insight. Those are the risks of bring a product to market that still has unsolved issues.
 
it seems there is already a following of people that have gone green with these things, but in the world today, people are still willing to pay 4 or 5 bucks a gallon especially when they are getting 30 or 40 miles a gallon. the auto industry really dictates what people drive by what they offer. if a company like gm were to scrap all their regular combustion engines for electric hybrids, they would go under as long as the regular consumer can still purchase a gas powered vehical. the climate is still not favorable for these cars , and as long as recalls and other issues still arise with them, people will remain to be scared of them. the regular combustion engine is tried and true, and i think the majority car owners will continue to rely on them, rather than the hybrid cars. unless gas reaches 8 or 10 bucks a gallon, people will continue to shy away from them. it is so much easier to pay and pump and continue on ,rather than have to plug in and charge up, and worry about whether or not they will be able plug in somewhere. IMO

Not sure what "get it bricked" means?

If the battery packs become FULLY discharged they are junk and need replacing at a $20,000.00+ cost to the car owner not the manufacturer and the car essentially becomes a $40,000 brick .

Although this may be a non-issue with the volt ?

While the Chevrolet has a gas generator to help keep the battery charged, what would happen if the battery is discharged completely? Nothing really. Chevrolet spokesperson Robert Peterson told us “This isn’t an issue for the Volt. The Volt uses only 10.4 kW of its 16 kWh battery. The rest of the battery space serves as a buffer to prevent overcharging or deep discharging.”
 
Its kinda like portable tools, how many times have you reached for your battery drill only to find out it was near death. This is the feeling I get from electric cars. Use for awhile then charge overnight.

Oh and about the volt being cutting edge technology, trains have been running on the diesel-electric idea since about 1940 or earlier. All GM did was to downsize the idea and package it in a poorly designed car.

Uh, I have NEWS. Hybrids were out BEFORE 1920

These are out of an old Dykes motor manual, and boy would I love to have a couple more issues of them!!

and even more strange was the Owen-Entz electric transmission, which had a generator armature and the driving motor armature on the same shaft. The FIELD coils of the thing was attached to the flywheel, and rotated around the OUTSIDE of the generator armature
