I have a 72 dart with a 340 in it, I installed a champion 3 core aluminum radiator but my clutch fan will not go in. I measured the fan height and it was 3 inches and I measured the gap between the water pump pulley and the radiator and it was 3 1/4 inches. My question is, is an electric fan my only option or is there a lower profile fan available that will provide adequate cooling. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

You can buy the clutch portion with shorter length.
V6 V8 Dakota for one. I believe the 1996 or older version. The depth is very short.

That's a common problem with those import radiators. Look at the side brackets. I "just bet" they are welded onto the sides of the radiator too far forward and that positions the radiator too close to the engine. Look at the space between the top tank and the radiator support. I bet there's a gap there. All of them I have seen are like that. With that wide 3 row core, you need all the space you can get.

you are exactly right, I did look at that and the core was welded in a good 1/2 inch from the end of the side brackets.

Apparently summit sells a shorter fan clutch 2.7 inches tall that is supposed to help with this issue.

Same here, Luckily I found a short shaft fan, can't remember from where, as I understand that the fan should be 3/4 inch from radiator for maximum effect..

Just so you know, for future reference;
I have a 367/4-speed in my 68 Barracuda, that by it's trapspeed of 93 in the Eighth, is making 430 hp.

The rad is an ancient one that I pulled from a 73Dart with a 318 with A/C. That would make it a 26" 2-row. I installed it into the original slant-6 core support designed for a 19". This rad is now 51 years old; so old that even the patches on the top tank have patches.
The clutch fan is for an early 2000s Ford Pick-up truck;
while the fan is a big 7-blade, also pirated off that 73Dart.
This system is adequate enough that I can run a minimum 207* cooling system temperature, and; it is adequate enough to occasionally run an idle-timing as low as 5* advanced, which allows for parading at 3.5 mph. For however long it takes, the engine-temp remains rock-solid.

The point is this;
my old junk works just fine, even in the 19" core-support.
So, then; If your 3-row rad has to go, to fit a fan-clutch;
for me, that would be of no consequence.

I’ve got the 2947 that I used on a 383 with a champion 3 core in an A Body. It’s too short for my 67 273, just sitting on the shelf. PM me if you are interested.
