Colorado salvage yards

-
I just got back from this yard and the oldest mopar they had was a 76 Dodge Aspen, at least that is the one that sticks in my mind. They had a few old trucks but I didn't think to check the years on them.

What I liked...
It was right here in town. It was as clean as I've ever seen a junk yard. All the cars are on concrete so you could go to the yard after a rain storm or during one if you would like, they had a hand cleaning station, there was a lunch wagon if you got hungry. I can't give a review of the food but it looked like a few people were enjoying it.

What I didn't like...
It was a dollar to get in, but I guess they are there to make money, and a dollar is only one double cheeseburger at McDonald's. It was pretty small and they did have enough old stuff, I was bummed out a the lack of Mopars so I looked over in the GM area and the only mildly interesting cars in that area was an '81 Firebird and a '78 Camaro.

Overall I think it was good, but I think I'll keep my eye on their web site to see if anything interesting comes in. I know that Speedway in Erie has some old stuff but it is pretty picked over. Just my 2 cents.

dad Mopar,

I live in Colorado Springs and have information available on contacting a few unlisted junk yards which have some darts
leave me an email with a number to call

U Pull & Pay, formerl;y Action Autos Salvage and Denver Used Pick Up PArts are at E Colfax Ave and N. Zeno St, east of Airport Blvd and West of the I170 and Colfax Ave Exit, 1/2 block east of n. Tower Rd. They have two yards right now, pre '94 and post '94.

I've been stripping a '74 Valiant 4 door wih a 318 (that came in running and driving) They usually have a decent older MOPAR selection, I've rebuilt two /6's and pulled a fully reman'd 318, 4 bbl intake with an Edelbrock 600 cfm with almost 30,000 on it. Proces are good. You pull ANY engine and pay $150.00 with a $25 core, TRANNY'S ARE $75.00 and a core. The guarantee parts for 30 days. There's a few running 440's in there now, and there's always the camper engines too (360,383,440), with 727's behind some of them. I've bought two compleyte A-bodies '71 Valiant with a /6 and '74 Duster, 318 with a 3 spd manual. Good place to spend a few hours. the just got in a decent '59 Fury, 318 that they're going to sell off. My son works there on the weekends so I usually know what's in the yard. Open M-F from 9-6 and S-S from 9-5.

Eme if you're looking for anything and I can check to see if they have it.

I went to Speedway auto salvage in Erie today, and while everything is well picked over, there are still a lot of dusters and darts with good parts, especially 67-75 cars. Only 4 early darts, all picked over. I noticed some good quarter panels, etc on some of the darts. A good 67 dart hood as well, and a real nice 64 or 65 Valiant grill. The owner is a little edgy, but he let me walk around as long as I told him what was looking for.

Someone on big block referred me to a yard in Pueblo that had some nice Darts that were not picked over too bad. I was looking for 69 S/S windshield trim which they had but I haven't made it down there yet. I think it was "W 29th street salvage" or something like that.

I've been going to Pull and Save for quite a few years now and you have to realize that this is a volume based enterprise. Once they get 10 of a certain catagory in (import, chevy, ford, chrysler) the 10 oldest in that catagory (no matter what has or has not been taken off of them) go to the crusher. :( That's the sad part, that good old stuff gets crushed, but the good part is that they are always getting new stuff in. I have also heard that there might be "insiders" that let a select few know what's arriving and they pounce on it.
I replied to an add on craigslist about 1971 Duster parts and learned that the owner took most of the stuff off and sent the rest to the junk yard. I inquired "oh really, what junk yard" and it just happened to be Pull-n-Save. So, I went by there about everyday after work until I knew when the car would go to the yard and arrived early one morning about an hour before they opened to make sure I was the first in line. I did make it in and got the disk brakes, fenders, interior pieces, marker light, etc. While I was there, another guy had an aircompressor and impact wrench and before you could say "A-Body" had the 8 3/4 rear end out and was gone. WOW!

Yeah man, you really got to be "on it" to get any of the desireable A-body stuff. They do post new arrivals on their website but I know I sure can't get there during the week.

That sucks about the guy with the air compressor. He must've known exactly what he was going for.

Oh, I forgot.. now it's $2.00 to get in! :sad5:

2 bucks is still cheap entertainment. :-D Even if I don't find what I was really looking for, I still manage to find bottle openers and loose tools under seats and in trunks and gloveboxes.

Hmm.. Looks like I know what I'm doing this weekend. Finding out if these two are still around, then taking a trip..

I will repeat after myself "Must not buy an engine. You can't afford it. Must not buy an engine."

Nikkis brother lives in Aurora and he told me that there was a huge yard next to the freeway that was packed full of old cars. I have no clue where it is and we never got a chance to go.

If the one he is talking about is north of Denver on I-25, that is Speedway Auto salvage. Get off on the Erie exit and get on the frontage road northbound. There is erie auto parts right on the frontage road and directly east of it is speedway.

I hit that this weekend.

They've got about 5 or 6 dusters, and 4 or 5 darts, all in various states of decomposition. I also saw 2 late 60's cudas, and a few valiants. They're all pretty well stripped, and they're all pretty well stock, what's left anyways. Although, if you feel like ripping parts off some older Diplomats.. :) There's two rows, one mostly plymouth, the other mostly dodge, about 500 yards long, and about 60 cars in total. Didn't see one past 1985.

Lots of dirt, lots of decay, lots of rust. Don't expect to find any usable panels. Of course, there could be some good parts under all the junk, but I didn't get the opportunity to look too close.

Not a bevy of treasures, althogh there was a sad Coronet 440 that warranted further inspection.. Also, the owner is a bit of a codger. I only got to look around because the girl I was with had a cool T-shirt on. Oh, and be prepared to be one of the only english-speakers there.

Also, if you've got a chevy or a ford, you're in a better position out here.. His Chevy selection was *massive*. Chevelles, Novas, Camaros.. Tons and tons.

Lot rules are.. No touching, no picking anything up, and no opening of the cars. Hell, I saw one stacked up at a 30degree angle on a pile of old rims. I wouldn't want to touch half of them, as they'd fall and kill me. :D

Leave your tools at home, he or his crew do all the pulling, but the prices I heard seemed nice and cheap.. mostly. He was charging a bit more to people who didn't speak english. I saw him quote somone $40 on a tire, then 5 minutes later quote a latino guy $60. Could be the guy just pissed him off, though. How he likes you seems to affect the price. :snakeman:

Fantastic lot for photographers, though..

Didn't get a chance to hit the "U Pull & Pay", weather started turning to crap so we called it in early. Might hit it next weekend or the week after. I'll update then, if anyone wants to hear about it.

So they don't like people who would want to look around and see if there is anything they need? Also I am interested and hearing about it.

Yeah, that's the impression I got, as that was mostly what I was doing. :D

(still kicking myself for not bringing the camera.)

If you've got a list of things you need, that should go over a heck of a lot smoother.

I'll update when I hit the next lot or two.

The guy at Erie is pretty much an A**.
Speedway will let you go in and check out what he has. I have spent days in Speedway.
Only walked through Erie's once. I needed a very specific part for a GTO.
Didn't have it but we looked. He escorted me too.
Asked about some LeMans trim parts and he quoted me an extremely high price.

I am curious if anyone knows of a junk yard on the western slope. Not in Grand Junction though. Been through several of those.

There is a few junk yards down in the San Luis Valley.
One the old guy won't let you walk through the yard but I remember he had a good bit of stuff. About a mile or two north of Del Norte.
The other few I have found, I had to drive around and there was a massive one that is owned by a family of Mexicans that won't let you look around at all. They have like three yards but don't give access. Hard to remember where they were though.
Alamosa has a yard on the south east side of town. Don't remember name.
They had a few items. I was looking for a GTO at the time but I recall several Mopars.

Interesting, I don't have any needs right now (besides money) but you never know what you will find when just walking around looking. Might find something you think you could use or a friend needs.

went to western off of federal and 76 and they have a few things but their selection is not big either, another one of those yards where if you have a ford or chevy you can really find some stuff. Every now and then you can find some decent stuff just all about the timing. I got the dash cluster for my 73 it was in good shape for about 8bucks.

There is also a place off of highway 85 in between brighton and greely but just out side of brighton. They have a good amount of dusters in there too some stuff if picked over but they got a good amount of mopars

have not been in Colorado since mid seventies as a kid, but did hear of a
place in Delta? Co a few years ago in Car Craft magazine. Believe it is in
the southeastern corner of the state. Was in or near one of Steve Magnantes Junk Yard Crawl features.

The original owner of speedway passed away last year. His son took it over and from what I hear opens it up when ever he feels like it. I have tried to go there a few times in the last year and its always been closed. It stinks because there are allot of 70 to 76 abodies in there.

Didn't know Bill had a son. Last I heard Bills wife was thinking of selling.
