Will be getting shifter rebuilt or replaced - what would be correct for 1968 4spd 383HP Barracuda? What is in there now likely came with 1971 donor car that provided 18 spline hemi 4 spd. buty I do not know what it was. Will Brewer have it? Getting new clutch kit and flywheel cleaned up balanced. Any recommendations? - don't really need HD clutch..No lockout now, maybe a dumb question but if we went with a shifter with reverse lock-out would it mean opening trans case? thnx

The correct shifter depends on when the car was built, but I don't know the cutoff date. Early cars had the Inland reverse lockout shifter and later cars had the Hurst. Console cars had different handles than non-console, so there were four different handles. Here is the '68 Hurst console handle, except it was originally chrome. I had it powder coated as the chrome was in bad shape and the powder was free.

thnks for pic ans reply - is that ball reverse thread by any chance? that looks like my shifter but mine is chrome and has no hurst logo - does yours? also not sure what you mean by 'console' shifter.

let me explain more where I am coming from on this: I have a 1971 A833 from (I'm told) an E body car. It got swapped to my '68 barracuda alogn with wtih a '68 383HP motor.. I want to know what type shifter would have come from the factory on that e-body tranny. Seems to work ok wioth setup but it is out of car now and want to rebuild it or replace it but I saw no id numbers so wondering what the heck it might be if it was original to doner car. thnks for patience with my ques.

thnks- I got to get numbers off off shift levers I think to get right match up to a new /re-conditioned unit..

The threads on all shift handles that I have ever seen are right hand. This is my son's shifter with the console installed.

well sounds like whatever is in there now is likely the shifter that came with the e body trans, - As it works ok in the A-body I suppose I will just try to get it rebuilt or find new one like it. As I mentioned earlier the shift stick on it is not pistol grip and I don't really want one in a '68 anyway..

Do you know if a '68 factory Inland shifter (has hurst mechanism) will work with my 1971 18 spline 4 speed transmission? There is a hurst comp/plus on there now.

1968 a body shifter were inland and hurst shifters. They started out with Inland and then on January 2 1968 they went to hurst shifters. The hurst console shifter was also the same for 69. The 68 hurst none console shifter is only a half year only handle. But will work in other years. The 69 to 71 are the same then they went to a bolt in style.

cool guys - thnx much. Got hold of a /68 Inland - we'll see how condition is. Might be nice for originality/discussion sake. Hope this all goes back together good! New clutch,TO, pilot bushing, resurfaced/balanced flywheel....

What was the ‘68 Barracuda Hurst console shifter ball style/color?

Was it woodgrain like in the Dart?
