What is the correct location for an Electronic Ignition box on a 1971 Duster 340? I know they were points until mid model year, and then electronic was optional.
I've seen them all over the place. Some use one of the windshield washer bottle screws to hold down one end, but don't know if that is correct.
On a power brake car, there is a brace that bolts to the inner fender behind the washer bottle, so I doubt that it would be the correct location for the ignition box.
Thank you.

Just for the hell of it, this is my '72 Dart's stock location.

My 71 Dart had 2 dimples by the windshield washer bottle that was the exact width of the ignition box. The same spot that they used in 1972.

Same place as a 72 a-body I would imagine. I never saw electronic on a 71 340 car though. Most all of mine had dual points

I think 72 was the first year for electronic ignition. And then only the 340 and the 440 got them. I believe by 73 most everything got electronic ignition.

Do you have a factory service manual for your car? There's a REAL good chance there's a picture or illustration in there somewhere that shows it.

As noted, the 1971 cars that received electronic ignition mounted the electronic control unit (ECU) on the left fender area in front of the windshield washer fluid container like the 1972 cars. The rear mounting bolt is about one inch forward of the washer fluid container mounting screw. The mounted ECU forward side hangs slightly over the edge of the fender edge. As also noted, if late enough, the fender may have dimples at the mount point. The following image is a 1972 car, but shows the mounted ECU:

The four terminal ballast resistor was mounted above where the previous point system ballast resistor was mounted. The following image shows the ballast resistor location:

This image shows a 1973 car, with the new ECU location for that year, through the 1976 models.

Note that the 1971 ballast resistor connectors differ. One side is a dual connector with white insulator like seen here. The other side is two single connectors with black insulators.

Chrysler’s electronic ignition, first appeared as a running production change after May 6, 1971 on 1971 models with 340 engine and manual transmission (Ref. Technical Service Bulletins 71-8-8 and D71-8-9), and introduced the four-terminal, dual ballast resistor, part number 3656199 and Electronic Control Unit (ECU), part number 3438850.

I might add, my '72, obviously a 318, has all new M&H harnesses under the hood and the ballast, coil, dist and ignition module wiring were all a perfect fit. My fender cover is pretty much got the ballast covered. Just like Vaanth has also noted.

Thank you for the photos and information Gary.
Interesting how the ignition box hangs over the edge at the front corner, but I've seen a few that way but didn't think it was factory.

I'm pretty sure I got my last SB electronic ignition swap parts from a 71 C body with a 360.
