Crap in heads

Can someone please confirm that I can clean out the all the crap located in the upside down u just above the exahust port on my 340 cylinder heads?

It's full of...stuff.

Just an FYI, I used an old carpet cleaner and adapted the hose down to 1/2 just for jobs like that.
Keeps junk from getting other places, but it looks like you are doing fine with the towels.

Truth be told, don't worry about it. Yes you can scrape, dig, vacuum the coked up oil and dirt that has fallen into the void, but over time it will fill up again. That void, is nothing more than a dirt collector that drives people nuts!

Well. I used a flat head and my shop vac. Got most out. Figured it was good enough.

Working on the engine in the car sucks.

Thats EPA mandated, do not tamper with it. It cleans up exhaust emissions.

its a blind hole, there to collect carb nuts and C-clips. All it does is thermally isolate that exhaust crossover path from the head water jackets. They still get damn hot though.
