Slow go as usual, but was able to get inner whiskers installed. Mounts and slotted holes didnt line up with those either. I enlarged the slots, thankfully a good amount of metal there to work with.
While in there, I lubed the heck outta the regulator and added anti rattle tape where it was missing. I "adjusted" the regulator....boy that novelty wears off quick! Also verified all the electrical in her arse end works... defrost,stop/turn/signal/4ways and reverse lights. With the reverse light housings, they didnt mount snug as the mount screws just mount into rear valance and were sloppy, shitty design. I bought some clips/speed nuts from hardware store. A pain in the *** to install, but in and snug. Basically a 2 person job. Should have put new bulbs in..:BangHead:
Still have to put the interior panel in and fine tune brake switch.

Spent a fair amount of time wrestling with interior panel and courtesy light bulb holder....I applied some blk electrical and white hockey tape to back side of festoon bulb holder as its EXTREMELY close to touching C pillar and would possibly short out.
That metal panel with new inner cat whiskers was a pain, but it's in. Tested and new LED works great. Overall the whiskers appear to fit good, but took a bit of work. Nerve wracking as I didnt want to wreck them...we'll see how they stand up. Window appears to be adjusted pretty good, but now door glass needs adjustment :BangHead:
Wish I was organized enough to have the metal panels powdercoated ahead of time. Next time:rolleyes:
Now to figure out what I'm gonna do with rear oem side panel. Obviously I wasnt careful enough and a couple of the panel clips popped thru the masonite panel. Velcro maybe like I did with the front door panels...

Making progress, altho its taking longer than I picture in my mind lol. Of course I forgot to put the wind lace on just as I was going to put sill plate on:BangHead:

Thankfully I decided to not use the oem panel clips, but instead glued velcro onto interior panels and the metal panel. 3spots, works great. The panel is "held" in place with big arm rest screws and also gets tucked in at the top under the stainless trim. Wrestled with the big rear stainless trim. But got smart and marked the holes where the clips go.
So the rear harness is on and done. Next is getting rid of the slight mouse piss smell! wiped with mr clean and "final" with Pinesol. Fingers crossed....still gotta vacuum.
Off for 2 weeks after tomorrow so not sure whether to insure and enjoy, OR get the windshield.guy out to remove so I can do my dash and harness upgrade as well as stainless windshield upgrade. 2 weeks, but nothing goes according to plan and my boat is calling me too.

Been a bit to update this but have made some good progress.
Rally dash redo is complete. The car is completely rewired from dash harness to rear lights.
While interior was out I scuffed some of floor pans from minor surface rust and rolled some Rustoleum on them.
With bucket seats out I had to do a couple repairs and replaced a broken spring that @Mr. Sinister generously sent me free of charge. I cleaned up and painted the tracks with Home Hardware Beauti-tone paint lol. It was a dead ringer for black suede!
Thanks again Frank for the spring. Buckets are in, dash is in, console, triple gauges. Need some minor tidying up but almost there. Glass guy coming for ws install tomorrow.
Thanks all for the help.
Oh drivers side bucket is missing tin strap for seat adjuster. I cobbled it with mech wire and it seems to work!
Probably something at work I can make one from

Haven't updated this in a while lol, altho I have started numerous threads with my S capades....taking a stab at a dual quad
Dual quad info

Wanting some more oomph, so building another small block for it
Restart the rebuild
Frustrating I haven't driven it in over a year, but I was able to get the 273 pulled last night on my own(not recommended) for me anyway lol.
1st engine I've pulled in this shop and it was TIGHT! Thank Christ I didn't pull transmission at same time. Would've been a no go. While it was hanging I realized crank pulley had to come off(huge), then the damper. Then had it maxxed out on the tilter, even then I had to force the hood up the "extra" inch to get everything to clear in "stages" lol. A few minor nicks, but no tears shed lol.
So now onto cleaning up the mess of an engine bay and the shop. That'll be a day or 3, then drop new mill in.
I'm hoping to get it in/driving for Fathers Day.
Thanks for checking in.

Well over a year since i posted here, so my 1st 904 rebuild will be documented here.
I figured with adding the 340, the 904 should have a go-thru. Transmission was ok but had a slight 2-3 flare. Plus we hadn't done anything other than a pan drop and filter change since Dad bought it in 2012. Documenting it here, to hopefully help keep it organized (at least somewhat).
@CFD244 lent me the Bible from Voetom.
Thanks Troy!
Seeing as how im thick, I'm watching Boobtube videos from "Duster Garage".
He has some good videos and a 6 part series on 904 rebuild.

Lots of parts n pieces so the plan is to remove everything as assemblies from the trans, and then teardown and inspect each sub assembly.
1st thing before disassembly was to measure endplay on input shaft. I measured approx 0.070", thats the upper end of spec.
Opening it up, there was evidence of someone being in there prior.
Dropping the pan i knew there was 1 hole with issues, turns out 2 dangit, as well as when I removed the valve body, one of the mount bolts was extremely loose and backed out a couple turns. I tried tightening by hand, no Bueno...another hole to fix.

Currently the subassemblies are all out and for the most part I've gone thru both rear and front clutches. Nothing standing out so far. Friction discs are showing wear on the rear clutch, steels appear fine.
I tried removing the shaft from rear clutch retainer, but another no Bueno. I removed the lock ring and tried tapping with a rubber mallet...nope... Not sure if i should bother, it appears fine, its just "stuck".
Ill have to go thru the other sub assemblies to get an idea of what kit to get?
Took tons of pics, here's a couple.

….me too!

Those Duster Garage transmission videos were pretty good and thought I’d revisit when my 904 day came!! Any valve body mods in mind?

Thanks guys, 1st trans so training wheels and support required lol.
I havent really thought of any mods yet, other than a Transgo Kit of some sort.
Following along Steve.

Not sure what this gearset is called, but something is going on. The planetary set won't come out and there is evidence of some "abuse". Also the 3 tabbed thrust washers are showing copper.
I have another trans that is lockup I wonder if parts are transferable.lu vs non lu

Thanks Rob, even with the book and Boobtube I cant keep track of what's what... sometimes I question my decision lol :BangHead:
Meh. Itta be aight. Just remember this. The dudes that put that thing together and the most experienced dudes in the world put their pants one one leg at a time.

Not sure(never am) which route im going to go yet as I have a spare LU 904 #4130972 and torque converter, both in unknown condition BUT told trans was rebuilt and good to go.
BUT with 340 and 323, I'm in need of a slight bump in stall anyway.
So a TC upgrade will be in order either way.
Currently THIS 904 has some issues.
1. Input shaft stuck on fwd drum.
2. Fwd planetaries altho function/spin, they won't come out of ring gear(yet lol)
3. A couple stripped holes in case.
4. Direct drum is "scruffy"(hoping emery/crocus smooth it out)
I haven't inspected output shaft yet either....

So do i put this 904 rebuild on hold and invest the time, effort $$ into the LU 904....
This 904 WILL get built as its original to car.
I stopped by local transmission shop to ask about pricing for a converter upgrade. Waiting to hear back for ballpark price.
I may get LU 904 out of shed and pull pan for a visual.
I got a "helicoil" kit and deep trans pan from Amazon, so altho no progress really, I'm spending $$ lol
**oh and I've read/heard on here and Boobtube about supposed issues with pump rotor gear tabs breaking off??**
Tabs on this one look good.... altho lots of "slack" between tangs on TC.

I love the idea of a lockup. But with that cam in your engine, you will need a converter to match. That won't be cheap. So if you want the original trans back in the car sooner than later, just put the lockup in with whatever you have and drive it. Save the money for a converter for the original. But if putting the original back is a someday thing, get a lockup converter that works with your cam and gears and enjoy it this summer. Who knows, you might love the lockup.
