It probably was fixable, anything is really, it just depends how much time and money you want to throw at it. The insurance company offered to sell it to me for $5500 I think? But then it would have had a salvage title for the rest of it's life. My buddy got it for much less than that and he let me pick the carcass a little bit. No regrets.

What insurance company did you have? A couple offer provisions where you keep the car in the case of a total loss - plus the agreed upon value payout of course.

Well. Taking 2 entire brake systems off of cars plus the heat kind of sucks! It’s actually cooler outside of the shop than inside of the shop right now.

Cleaned up the new to me center section. Going to drop the 3.23s in a bit.

spacers needed for the brackets and the axle retainer flange, honestly the axle probably goes in before the brackets. Reading this from MoParts think the guy just was test fitting it.

Also the distribution block, I wanted to reuse the one from the black car but the plug for my brakes doesn’t go on it, so I’ll have to use the one from my copper car.

The 3rd is dropped, it was pretty dirty inside it so I’m glad I dropped it. Maybe I’ll be done sometime next week.

That is a general motors style valve assy. Just splice on a different plug end meant for that valve. If it's all off the donor, use its wire plug if its correct for the valve.
 
Well I just spent the last 2 days off and on reading this entire thread. Very cool, seeing you and the family kinda grow up lol. I’ve been helping my dad redo his 69 numbers matching 340 4 speed Swinger.

Thanks, a lot of this thread has been tons of bs’ing with members of FABO which is great. Also a lot of good information from a lot of guys much smarter than I am with these old **** boxes.
 
Made some progress today and if I wouldn't have shot myself in the eyes with brake cleaner I would have finished tonight.

New 3rd member is installed and torqued to FSM spec, axle shafts installed and torqued. Front brakes are completely hooked up with brand new lines, calipers and pads (I didn’t reuse the old ones from the black car).

All that is left is to install the Master cylinder, rear calipers, brake pads, rear lines, park brake and bleed everything. I bought a power brake bleeder a while ago, so it will be easy.

Trying to think if there is anything else I need to do.

That’s funny, sounds about like what happens at my house all the time.

I actually used a new distribution block that I got with my kit from DrDiff. This worked nicely because I used the front brake lines from inline tube that went to the block.

Mine just blew and covered only my face! OH so my arms also! Yea but I love that Schultz Body stuff and I am (more) careful now!!!! :thumbsup: :BangHead:
 
I’ll try to finish the brakes this weekend. Taking my son on a surprise visit to a Pokémon expo on Saturday.

Pistons and rods showed up for the 408, thanks to a member here @Rocket. I’ll check some machine shops to get it balanced and the block cleaned up.

These brakes better be perfect because they are a pain in the ***!

If anyone is looking at this and thinking about buying rear disc brake, the DrDiff kit is significantly easier to work with.

These calipers don’t have the middle part of the piston open like other eldorado calipers. after fighting for a bit I got online and looked and well I had to rip the little metal doohickey off in order to get the pads to seat in the caliper. Oh and I couldn’t figure out how to get the e-brake line off, so I said **** it and am doing it with it on.

After I got that caliper on I didn’t get anything else on. I had a contractor come by the house to look at this shop (the bigger one). He is going to install new trusses, require it and spray foam the roof so I can add hvac, I may move the garage doors so I can have 2 bays for more lifts… whoop

Then as I was walking inside I saw a puddle in front of my garage meat freezer… my son left the door open last night… whelp, there goes 1k in meat.

Then I got a new dishwasher delivered. Started installing that before mowing the lawn… while mowing the lawn my front tire hit the fence and destroyed a hydro. :soapbox:

Safe to say today was not my day. :icon_fU:
 
Here’s a coffee cups toast for a new and better day today!

I put a dumbbell on my freezer door last week after a similar incident! Not even sure what he was hunting for…
 
Went to a Pokemon convention with my kids today so only worked on it for a couple of minutes.

I was trying to reuse the front cable to the parking brake on the purple car because it was a pain trying to take it off the black car… but I don’t think my cable is long enough, I’ll have to snag the one off the black car and see if it is a little longer. I have plenty of extra cable attached to the calipers but I can’t get them any further past the rear mounting location.

After this is connected I just have to install the new master cylinder and bleed the brakes.

you could extend the stud with one of those long (2") nuts and another length of studding. that'd move the part the cables hook into back where you need it to be. hope that makes sense.

This is exactly what I have to do. I tried the other cable and it’s the exact same length. I’m assuming the black dart has the mounting location at a different spot on the frame, because the rear cables have tons of slack if the mount was further towards the front.
