So this later model OMC 50hp twin has a giguntious lower unit and IT WILL NOT FIT into a 55 gallon drum!!! I'm been thinking, looking at old oil tanks, etc, but they are dirty and RUST. There's a guy in town who sells all sorts of nonsense. I paid a fair amount for this thing, it's about 3ft high X 3ft wide X ??4-5 ft long. Hell I can get an outboard INTO EACH END of the thing LOL. It had a large expanded metal rotor and ?? washed vegetables or some such. I have no idea....yet what the hydraulics do or if I can do anything with 'em. I'm going to have to junk it out right in the truck to get the weight down so the little Farmall loader can handle it LOLOL..............Or maybe I'll just mount an outboard on the OUTSIDE and use IT for a boat!!

Just got in took this photo at about 8:30. Already "lost a lot of weight." The gearbox about gave me a hernia!! That huge mass of piping, filters and valves is "captive" in the pickup. I'll have to drag it out with the tank, but at least it's separated

It is bigger'n heavier than the aluminum one out of the Dakota!! I just glanced at the tag, I believe it's 15:1 reduction. Had a hydraulic motor mounted on Tomorrow we'll see if the little farmall loader will lift what's left, and if the plazma cutter will "hack" this stuff, pun intended LOLOL

I wonder if that was a commercial dough mixer. That would make sense of the gear reduction, thats a beefy GR.

The seller claimed it was for some vegetable process. Who knows if he is right. The "impeller" which he wanted more for, I left layin there. It's a huge thing with holes punched in. Doesn't look like it was for dough Holes were ?? 1? or 1 1/2 or so. It will take some work to make this useable. It's not deep enough to mount an outboard, so I'll have to construct a "transom." No idea yet how the plazma cutter will handle this. And drilling/ working stainless is a PITA. Tank material appears to be at least 1/4" With all the junk now removed from the end, I can BARELY budge it off the bed. It's HEAVY

I iz tard. Made some progress today. Got the extra junk plazma'ed off. There was some fittings inside the tank that would interfere with engine mounting, so they got hacked. I still need to go to work with the angle grinder. This is not deep enough to just throw an outboard in "barrel style" so I'll bolt some heavy angle iron vertically along the outside edges, then stack some 2x6 pressure treated on edge to raise the "transom" about 10" I'll be able to get a long shaft big V4 50-75-85 etc HP in there. it is about 27 deep X 50L x 40ish W

Heck I could mount a couple of smaller short shaft SIDE BY SIDE LOL. Has a 2" pipe I'll need to buy a cap and couple other smaller plugs, once the "transom" is done she'll be ready.

You can get an idea of size of the thing, those shrouds resting in there are off old 50/75/ 85 etc HP V4 JohnnyRudes

The thing that spawned all this is partly visible at upper right. It's a 70's Johnson 50 twin, the gearbox/ cavitation plate, when the engine is mounted, is all too long for a 55gal barrel

With all the extra junk torched off, I can barely lift one end. It's HEAVY. I think I'll eventually shorten the legs so the bottom is just above ground level, then I won't have to lift smaller outboards so far. The larger ones-----I use the tractor/ loader I can still get a 35 in the barrel.......barely......on a good day

That's pretty slick, beats the hell out of a 55 gal drum. Nice mounting surface too.

You did make some progress!

LOL!! Taking it easy today. Got the wiring straightened out on the "new" 16ft would like to get out tomorrow. Gonna be bangin on the "90F door" all this week

Yeah it's like 101 on the front porch here in the shade today. I finally got all the grass cut. I'm bout spent for the day.

Make a hot tub out of it. 83 here @ 47% humidity. 15:1..there is my bandsaw reduction drive! I don't think a 2HP electric motor could even turn that thing.

Pishta I'd love you to have that gearbox but you cannot afford the shipping!!! LOLOL

(Also it's a proprietary splined female drive designed to mount the hydraulic drive motor right into the gearbox)

Well the thing is semi-operational. Not the "Nirvana" I'd hoped LOL

Good news: The late model "waz mouse infested" 50hp 2 holer seems to run OK and pumps water --and it pumped water all over the back yard LOL

Engine pictured in the tank is a 35-40hp that is next on the list.

Bad news: Damn thing is long shaft. Unlike the older models it does not have an easily identifiable section added to the length. This means either the upper or lower unit is longer, and that means a lot of work and expense. I MAY redo the new boat as a tall transom, put that one on it and either sell it or not

I'm going to test run it on the 14 ft, long shaft or not. You can see it's "close to the ground" LOL

Other stupidity: Forgot to either level it or cut down the legs, NOW it's full of water LOL I knew I'd have to build some type of shield/ baffle, but for smaller engines I can get by without

Well today was a "fail." I had run the 50 shown above in the test tank and "thought" it was fine. But it hard to tell as you cannot run any power in there. So today I got it out on Lake Fernan, and turns out one hole was not firing. I'm STILL not sure "what" but I suspect it's an intermittent coil. The coils show some cracking in the epoxy. It was a very short boat ride, and amazing how POOR these girls run on one hole "We'll see."
