Does it irk you……………

Oh, yeah.
I can tell right away how old the person who posted "liters" is... Extra demerits if you write "litres" (Okay, if you're one of our non-North American members, I'm good with that).
Only exceptions are Magnums (just to distinguish them from LAs), Gen III hemis or the occasional 2.2/2.5 four banger... You're usually safe by sticking with the factory designations.

Just think of all of the Fox Body fanboys running around with "5.0" badges on their fenders.

The really funny thing is they weren't even five liters. The 302 is a 4.9 .
Boss 302, and Z/28 were specially configured to be under the five liter Trans-Am limit, even with a .030 overbore. Mopar was not remotely competitive till the rules allowed destroking a larger motor (340, to 305).

:rofl:I mostly see it spelled that way in an ad for one of those 4 bolt main Chevy 350's (475 horse out of a Vette, you know the ones)

That's what probably started it, when Ford changed their designation from 302 to 5L. Heck, they even tried it in '66 with the Galaxie 7 litre, but that went over like a lead balloon at the time. But that was how the factory named it, so ya gotta give it a pass.
But Mopar never offered a 5.6! The stripes, hood callouts, factory paperwork all called it a 340- so that's what ya gotta go with.
Explain how a poked and stroked 5.9l Magnum becomes a 408 c.i. instead of a 6.7l.? Only in America...!

I'm a (not so frequent) member of a Ford truck forum, and the younger guys there can't stand it when I tell them a 460 is NOT a 7.5L!

Screw 'em.

If I build a stroked 454, it'll be a 496. (I tell people it's "a hundred over 396", lol)
Chevy put the same bore/stroke in a truck, called it an 8.1
To me, the difference is the vintage of the block.
