Trying to build a "jack" to separate the ball joints without hurting the boots, so I went into the local fastener store, bought a 5/8 coupler nut and two 5/8 x 1" bolts, + one longer bolt "in case."

Then I decided I might want a ?? pusher shoe?? that would screw onto the stud, so I take the upper joint into the store and lay it on the counter.................

"I need a couple of tall nuts. I didn't measure that but it's either 9/16 or 5/8."

(You can LOOK at it and see it's probably fine thread, so a good guess would be SAE.)

So "he" fiddles around and frowns and sticks it in some gauge thing on the wall and says............

"What's it off off?"

"It doesn't matter it's a STUD"

"Well I was just trying to figure out if it's metric."

"I already TOLD you it's either 9/16 or 5/8 and it's probably SAE. It is NOT metric."

"Well I'm just trying to figure out what thread it is."

"I just told you. It's 9/16 or it's 5/8 and it IS SAE"

So he types in the computer for about 8 minutes and finally heads for the stock room. I sigh a relief.

He comes back with grade 8 "standard" nuts, and doesn't have any "tall" ones.

Counter guys now a days don't have any common sense. If it isn't in the computer they don't have a clue. If the internet crashes the world will come to a screeching halt. SAD

It's not really the counter people all of the time. Auto parts are not auto parts stores anymore. They are accessory houses. The way the companies are arranged breeds ignorance and dependence on their computer system. God forbid any of them need to look at a book for anything.

Somewhat in their defense......they ain't a hardware store. Even still, a good old school auto parts store wouldda had what you were lookin for.

Yeah my regular counter guy is a member here and he is so dumb he accidentally Air Freighted my head gaskets cross country to me at no extra cost what a Maroon -eh! it pays to find 1 or 2 guys and develop a personal relationship with them , I know 2 guys in the shop I go to on a first name basis, I also regularly pay a small premium for parts they don't stock to be brought in rather than go to the competitor who does stock them because 2 or 3 dollars is nothing compared to having knowledgeable guys there when you need them . Hopping from store to store to save a few pennies will only cost you in the long run . Thanks Glen you da man buddy.

I....they ain't a hardware store..

This was a ........fasteners...........store, not a parts store. Anybody that thinks they can work at a fasteners place ought'a be able to put a couple of thoughts together, or have a caliper and know how to use it.

This guy didn't look to me like he had the brains to do much.
