Talking with some people about a 318 with an E58 360 cam in it. They claim it will kill the low end torque? My dad used to put the E58 cam in all his 318's because he liked the slight lope at idle. Never thought about it killing the low end?

The 340 cam. Same thing.

No it will not kill bottom end torque.

.................yes it will unless u run the factory hi stall converter with it.....u should put in the matching springs also.....kim.........

As long as whatever it's going in has a 3.21/3.23 gear or more, you'll never know the difference, especially if you give the timing a good once over. :)

No. It won't. You will notice more power all around. Probably some gas mileage if you can tune it too. No down side.

1968 specs
318 makes 230hp @ 4400 // 340 @ 2400
340 makes 275hp @ 5000 // 340 @ 3200

Same torque just 800 rpm higher but substantially more HP. I think it would FEEL more powerful al the way around.

340 cam is tuned to operate in the range from idle -5800 rpm's. From 700 rpm's to 1400 rpm's, the 318 cam may perform as well, however, most converters will stall past the 1400 rpm range very easily, and as long as the car is in gear and moving, to touch the accelerator will almost always put your rpm's in a place were the 340 cam will be adding performance. By the way, I've used the 340 cam in 318's, and never had a "lopey" idle. They idle as smooth as a new 340, which is very smooth. You will need to advance the ignition timing a few degrees.

I ran one in a 318 with Rhoades lifters and it ran great. Even with a 2.76 gear. It got 17.75 MPG highway.

It's a good cam for a 318.

what kills the 318's as far as upgrades is bolting on a set of 360 heads in hopes of power. you end up lowering the compression ratio a couple of points
