Im thinking about switching to electronic distributor and finally get rid of the points system. Right now the engine is a 1974 LA 360ci with a standard points condenser setup. Can I grab a dizzy and coil off of a magnum, 360, or 318 (pick and pull has a ton of them right now) and use that in conjunction with the mopar orange box ignition system? I don't think those dizzy's use vacuum advance though, how would I get around that issue?
Thanks guys

You need one with vacuum advance. If you find one without it's a "lean burn" system, and will also "not have" a mechanical advance.

The PROBLEM with a junkyard dist is that any of them will have a long slow advance curve, and really need to be recurved (welded slots or the FBO limiter plate kit) to have a good advance curve.

Well just got back from the Junk yard, found a 85 Dodge ram with a 360, had a good distributor in it, vacuum advance, two wire hookup, no corrosion or nastiness in it. Had an orange box ignition module under the hood as well. Snagged the dizzy, and the wiring harness. Motor looked fairly fresh, took the intake off just to satisfy my idle curiousity, someone had put some time into that engine. Was side swiped and bent the frame pretty bad.
Now explain to me the whole advance curve setup? Im used to old 4.3L I6 jeep engines, and 4.0L I6's, we didn't worry too much on those engines.

Lots of threads on this subject..............

FBO sells a limiter plate kit if you don't want to weld......Go down the page, find J685K

Remember that specs are in DISTRIBUTOR degrees which are half of "crank" degrees. This advance is marked 15, which is THIRTY at the crank. Way too long. "Generally" you want 22 or LESS at the crank, so 10-11 in the distributor

There's a "backyard chart" of slot length to degrees advance............

if someone put that much time into the engine I'm betting its rebuilt; you should grab it if its a cheap pick and pull thing

Im thinking it was rebuilt... The intake gaskets were still nice and blue, no carbon to speak up, and no garbage sludge buildup under the intake... If I was back in SC and found this, it would be in my garage on an engine stand as a standby just in case motor right now
