I've dug around here and done some searching and have found a couple of people that took the plunge and put an EPAS system in their car, but curious if anyone else has done some since then? Seems like there are only 2 or 3 that show up pretty often, so was hoping that a couple other people might have tried it out and had some pictures/advice. The main thing I'm interested in is what components people ended up using. There are several different motor assemblies out there from the junkyard or aftermarket. Some are pretty small like the Yaris units, others are fairly large like the Kia ones. I was interested in knowing if anyone had used one of the smaller units and noticed any issues with it. I think the motors might be similarly sized though, it may just be the gearbox that is different. Based on vehicle weights, the Yaris is a good 1000 lbs lighter than my Dart, so guessing that might not be the best fit for longevity, but didn't know if anyone had real life experience with anything other than the typical Prius parts.
I'm also curious if there is any practical difference between the earlier and later units. It seems like the torque sensor changed in '10, but all the plugs appear to be the same, so I would assume they might direct swap. My plan is to actually try to run a controller as it was installed in the donor car it came from with CAN messaging for speed and RPM as I already have a CAN bus in my car and an Arduino or Raspberry Pi to build the messages with, so I don't need a system that can operate in fail-safe mode. There seems to be less info out there on using these setups in anything other than fail-safe though, so that's kind of its own separate issue. Hoping to shop around and try to find a deal on a unit to start playing with, but wanted to get an idea of what had worked well and what to look for.
