I’m sure some have seem this in a felpro timing gasket kit. I’ve never seen one and assume it goes here. Correct me if I’m wrong. Don’t have a service manual that shows this. Didn’t find anything in the search and google only gave me 1 site in which they said this was to keep the front seal moist. It’s on so if it’s not right then......oh well.

Cant hurt anything. Will sop up the leak for a few minutes.
I think it may keep seal clean(er)

Hopefully it doesn’t leak! I replaced the front seal/timing cover/water pump/oil pan gasket. Next time I will Pull the engine out. So many brackets!!!

Kind of makes you long for no power brakes, no power steering, no ac dont it!

Or at least the newer magnum stuff. I mean there are no less than 6 bolts that hold the ac/alternator bracket and they have to be installed in a certain sequence. Or on the power steering bracket that has to be installed AFTER you install the balancer! Ask me how I know!!!

Do you frequently take your RPMs up to and sometimes over 7K?

So what is the definitive application? Did Mopar just stop using it some where on the timeline? Aren't all the timing cover set-ups basically the same year to year?

                            Nope 55-6 at the most.

Hard to say for sure, but I seem to remember them showing up in some kits decades ago.

That does not answer my question which is wHY was it used on some earlier motors and not on later motors?

I just did a timing set swap in my 74 dart 318. I did not use the felt gasket I could not see any literature that showed where and when to use it.
                              So far no leaks!

What threw me for a loop is the Rock auto OEM style Balancer I installed, had NO TIMING MARKS!!!!

Seemed odd. I made my own, not sure how precise I was but the old girl is much happier now and the timing mark I made doesnt bounce around like the old one did...

I had to call Felpro and asked, I also put the felt washer behind the balancer. They said, if there is a provision for it use it...meaning if there is a cupped area for the felt to fit into on the harmonic balancer. So if your balancer, maybe an aftermarket, with out this provision, it does no good and will just sling off after a few high speed rod checks......lol.

Is this something the aftermarket came up with? I don't recall ever seeing one on any motor I've taken apart?
