I changed the plugs on my 70 Duster 340 this morning and tried to route the plug wires a little better and didn't think to mark where they went - foolishly assuming they were in accordance with the standard firing order. Wrong!!

After I plugged in the wires and turned the car on I got a nice fireworks display out of the top of the carb. Pulled the cap and brought #1 to TDC and the rotor is pointing straight at #1. Could I be 180 degrees out? If so, how do I correct?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

#1 needs to be TDC on the compression stroke to be true #1 or it could be 180 out. pull #1 plug turn motor till you feel pressure in the hole (use finger) then align timing mark to zero. check dist for #1. If off remove dist and drop back in so rotor points at #1. The firing order is 18436572.

I assume you did not have the distributor out? No reason to assume it was "in correctly" as you can "make" no1 "any hole" depending on the postion of the distributor gear and the distributor.

Pull no 1 plug, bump the engine until you feel compression on your finger, bring the marks up to about 10-15 BTC, and wherever the rotor points is no1

You ARE?? running the wires CLOCKwise? 18436572 VERY easy to switch 5/7

So, I think I did this correctly and everything appears to look correct. However, before I put it back together I figure I'd show you some pics for reassurance.

Does this looks right to you guys?

This pic may be a little better. Should the rotor be pointing at the piston or the strike point for #1 on the cap?

So, I pulled the valve cover and checked the intake and exhaust valves to see if they were both closed at TDC because that should tell me if I'm on the compression stroke?? Well, exhaust was closed, intake was open. Turned the motor until #1 was at TDC again and both valves closed, and rotor was 180 degrees out.

Am I correct in my understanding that both valves should be closed at TDC on compression stroke?

yes :glasses7: just remember the piston is on it's way up when they are closed, I use a straw (drinking straw) and put it in #1 and feel the piston come to the top and as I feel it start to move down I back it up to the top and that will be top dead center

Well I guess you didn't read my post and could have saved pulling a vc.

DO NOT put the timing marks on TDC, put them where you want initial timing, IE 10, 15, 20 BTC

Even better, if you "renumber the cylinders," LOL, the old Ford 260/ 289/ 302/ 390/ etc 15426378 is the SAME FIRING ORDER

Interesting that Ford engineers did it different. But apparently just a numbers game. lol

Thank you all for your help. Got it started today... still a little rough, but I think once I dial in the timing I'll be good to go.

I like women 18 to 43 not 65 to 72. Auto Shop teacher told me this 40 years ago and it stuck.
