I'd say the shop bakes it in a big oven and then runs it thru a shot blast cabinet. Both of those pieces of equipment use the hound out of electricity, so that may be what it costs to cover labor and the light bill + make 3 dollars...lol.

There would be no complaint from me to be handed that bill. I've been gathering quotes for a 327 Chevy that I acquired in a hot rod. Not putting a Chevy back in it so I have no use for the SBC, but it's a fresh rebuild - never fired; everything is brand new - that got water in a few cylinders and will require it to go +.010" more and a new set of pistons/rings. It's already +.030 from the rebuild, and +.040 pistons for SBC are readily available....and cheap.
The only work I need done is bore/hone cylinders and knock the pistons off the rods and press the new set together. $600 for the rebore and $55 ea. for the rods....just that work alone is over 2 times more expensive in SoCal!

The short block was nasty dirty. Its entire life since 2000 seeing every Mich winter. But various oil leaks did help preserve things!

Yes but I was not being inconsiderate. They receive engines- core engines needing rebuilding often and those engines are grimy and dirty. I planned on them cleaning and de greasing it, I knew it would be an added considerable expense. I don't mind paying $$$ for that service and they made money doing it. All good!eck.. yeah.. i woulda charged you extra
Your man may have hosed himself, Lifters, VL106 quantity 1 ?

Oh, and I supplied ALL the parts!
I had a shortblock assembled at Hughes Engines about 20 years ago. I supplied the block, crank and rods. They did their race prep machine work and supplied the remaining parts. The bill, $3800

I may have been given a discount but I'm not sure- again I know the owner. For Heads I tasked them to find a set of usable Magnum heads. I have abandoned my chinese EQ Magnum heads with LA bolt pattern because they are just to questionable in quality-for performance. By tasking the Machine shop to find a set of heads I had two people in the know looking for me: The supplier to the machine shop and then the machine shop themselves. They found me a BEAUTIFUL set of Magnum heads. I purchased the castings from the machine shop and am currently mildly porting and polishing those castings. Magnum era iron castings are soo much cleaner than the LA era. Parting lines are tight and match up- not as much slaggy junk to smooth out. When all is said and done I will have a some $$ into OEM heads but Im fine with that. A different machine shop 30 miles north of me actually drills Magnum heads with the LA intake bolt pattern. I will be doing this. I already have Hughes valve springs, retainers, locks and new Int and Exh valves.

Thanks. Goal is a reliable non temperamental street engine that will never see the strip- but capable of low 13s or better. It will have a rebuilt Weiand 144 street blower that will provide 5lbs of boost. Cam is a Howards roller 220/225 deg dur @.050. I had Joes Distributor build me a factory electronic unit. Again- the goal is is a fun punchy responsive engine that is reliable and requires minimal corrections/repairs/tinkering.
