Found: 1970 Dart Custom GT A65 code Burnt Orange 318 3 spd on the floor

I love 70 GTs. There, I said it! I have tried to find production figures on these for years. I can't even find good figures for all the 70 LH23 cars - 2 door Dart Customs - and all the GTs are Customs with the A65 option added. I don't know where the 5000 vehicles number came from, but I think that's a guess and a bad one at that.

Here's my 1970 Dart GT in progress:

Perhaps some of the absolute best things about these cars is that:
1) you almost never see them - I hate going to a show to find other cars just like mine.
2) since a lot of people see no value in them, no one bitches when you build the car the way YOU want to make YOURSELF happy!!! Like someone said earlier, it's the HOBBY I enjoy. I'm not building the damned thing to sell and make money.

I'm building this car specifically to do looong distance road trips... thousands of miles at a shot.

The "H" in LH23 is for High - this is the high end trim option for both Customs and GTs - nicer fancier interior (dash trim all the way across to the far end of the glove box in fake wood grain - nicer door panels that match the stitch pattern in the seats (even 340 Swingers don't have it) and stainless door panel trim strips where the others are just painted. GTs are not just bucket seat cars, but bucket seat/ console cars.

Do u or did u have any of his info? Kim
That my friend is a sad story. I don't know if you remember, but he owned and operated the 70-71 Dart GT Registry web site. Joey was really interested in getting it and making it an offshoot of this site. I think he tried to get in touch with Bruce's ex and never heard a thing. All that information was lost. I was fortunate enough to get a few of his books, but nothing Mopar related. He loved airplanes too. I got his favorite book about planes and a few other things. That was it.

That’s too bad. I remembered that so that’s why I got your attention. I was hoping all the info he had never got lost/thrown out. Bruce sure was a valuable asset to this site. Kim

He was a good friend, too. I would not be so into slant sixes were it not for him. He was right! lol

70 used the same GT emblems as 69.

71 had a unique emblem on the rocker panel under the fender dog leg.

Yes, pictures are helpful, however, I currently only have pics of the build sheet and the fender tag. The owner pulled down his ad after I looked at the car. He agreed to sell the car to me because I want to see it restored and not parted out. Here's a visual of the car: It looks more red than burnt orange, probably had some repaint work over time. It has a black roof original to the car, body side moulding and a bumble bee stripe (black) but no code for that...looks to have been added. Interior is black 70 duster buckets and the really cool thing is that the door panels are pleated same as the seats...that was in 1970 only from what I can tell. The car is rusty: needs quarters, fenders, front rails and firewall, trunk and extensions, full floor and probably rear rails. Hood is also rusty underneath. Bumpers will need chrome too. No title which is a pain but oh well.
Now...we need someone like OldKimmer to step up (think he might have owned one of everything) and impart some wisdom on us. I want to determine if I should take this on or let someone with more knowledge and resources to bring this historically significant (I think) back to life.

Well I think I made my decision I have a very very solid 1973 dart 4 door with everything I need and many parts to sell.
The fire wall inner fenders and frame rails are perfect. This car was a guys hot rod before passing it has been garaged for about 7 years and I got it for $900. The kick in the *** is I just spent $300 this morning on a front clip for the car but this one is so much nicer.

Good luck with your project, keep us posted on your progress with a build thread.
Your parts car looks like a really good score! I'm sure you will be able to sell off your extra parts easily.

Very cool!

I'm more versed in the '71 model, but I agree with @str12-340 that the 5,000 number, mentioned earlier, seems high for the 1970 Dart GT production.

When I got my '71 Dart GT I contacted the folks at Chrysler Historical. I was told a lot of the records they had were destroyed in a fire, but the gentleman I spoke with told me there was ~96,*** Darts produced in 1971 of which ~1.3% of them were the GT model. He also mentioned he could not remember the Slant6 vs. 318 break down.

Speaking about my car, yes it is a rare car, but that in itself doesn't make it valuable. With that said, I have made some changes that I wanted to. So, build it how you want!!

Hey DartGTDan, can you post a picture of your GT emblem?
I looked at your photos, is the emblem down low on the rockers?

So here's the thing...I did some homework when I bought my GT a couple of years back. Gt by 1970 was an appearance package more so than a performance package that it was in the late sixties and consisted of. Woodgrain console shift, light duty 904A 3sp. automatic transmission, bucket seats, 318 8cyl. 240hp. LA engine with 2bbl. carb. roof drip rail moulding, wheel lip moulding, grill surround moulding. Music Master AM. radio. Accent stripe, (NOT a bumblebee stripe). Built to Canadian specs. I came here for help but the responses from all the doorknobs drowned out any real help.

Unlike ford, where "GT" got you at least a V8 (although it could be a 2 barrel), "GT" was never a performance package for Dodge.

It was basically- "bucket seats".

Not unusual at all to see six cylinder Dart GT's from inception all the way to at least 1969.

Not sure I've seen a six cyl 70/71 but my money says they are out there.

Anyone got one?

Maybe a I should check Hamtramckhistorical
