Hey guys, need some education. My local U pull it junkyard just got in an 88 Gran Fury unmarked police car, hit in the right rear end. I first noticed the cop wheels when passing by, and then looked inside to see the plain upholstery. It only has 57,000 miles. I popped the hood, and it looks like a 318. It was the first time I ever saw a power steering cooler, although I had previously read about it. I'm wondering what could be of use to me in upgrading my 67 barracuda. I remember reading the steering box is quick ratio on these cars, so I'm thinking that's a no brainer. Can anyone tell me if the 318 would have anything special other than being a 4 barrel? I didn't think to look underneath to see if it was a 727, but it seems I remember reading they were out of production by then, so maybe the relevant question is whether there is anything heavy duty about that 904 if in fact that's what it has. I suppose the car woud have an 8 1/4 and a rear sway bar, and I guess it's safe to assume it would be a sure grip. I just don't remember reading anything about M body rear swaps into an A-body. I think I have that right, that it's an M body. Anyway, if anyone can shed some light on cop car features I could take advantage of, please share. I sincerely appreciate it. As for my car, it's a slant six 7 1/4...but not for long....I have the R body front disk brake setup ready to go and 74 control arms and V8 K frame. thanks...

The 318 had some goodies like a high volume oil pump and windage tray. I believe the heads and exhaust manifolds were better, maybe 360 units? The rear sway bar may be used but would probaby need to be fabbed up if using on a rear other than an 8 1/4. The 8 1/4 rear probably has 11 inch brakes and a sure grip, may be worth grabbing. The trans was a lock-up style and not good for performance, junk in my opinion but probaby had some better guts for longevity. The steering box I am not sure about, will it even work? The power steering cooler is cool, the car probably has engine and trans oil coolers as well, all neat stuff. I would also snatch up the cop rims and hub caps too if the price is right. Check out if the car has any other police items on it like a bigger dome light mounted between the sun visors, spot light, push bars, dash mounted mechanical oil pressure gauge, inside trunk release, etc, all cool items that you can always re-sell. BTW, the mileage is probably 257,000! Good luck :-D

Being a cop car, it ought to have the certified 125MPH speedo. I'm sure the M Body guys wouldn't mind have that.

Welcome to the site. I have an '88 just like it that I plan to strip down for parts. Contact Abody Joe for info on the rear. It can be used but requires changing the spring perches as it is a couple inches wider than our a bodies. The tranny is probably a 998/999 - a 904 with a lower first gear ratio and a couple extra clutches inside.
