As the title says I have a freshly rebuilt 489 case 8-3/4 3rd member with OEM 3:23 gears and a sure grip for sale.

Has all new Timken bearings, new seal and a solid pinion spacer. Small 7260 (std. A-body size) yoke. I completely disassembled it, had the case hot tanked, disassembled the cone type sure grip and inspected and found to be in absolutely excellent condition (.080"+ clearance before the cones bottom out) so I just polished it all up and reassembled it, I pressed on all new Timken bearings, polished the ring and pinion and assembled it using a solid pinion spacer and setting the pinion preload and backlash. Set gear pattern and painted the housing cast coat grey. I also used Loctite on all the bolts and torqued them to factory specs so nothing will come loose on you. I attached several pics I took during the rebuilding process.

I'm located in central IL about half way between St. Louis Mo and Springfield IL 3 miles off of I-55. I prefer local pickup and can meet you within 100 miles if you can help me a little with the fuel cost.

At the present time I have nothing to ship this in so if it doesn't sell local within a few days I'll build a small crate for it.

$550 obo plus shipping

I forgot to mention but I made sure the side gear splines were properly aligned when I assembled the sure grip so you won't have any problem installing the axles.

Here are some more pics I took. The last 2 show the splines are properly aligned

GREAT deal on a rebuilt 8 3/4 center section from a knowledgeable and reputable member!

I see your custom made bracket worked out well for holding a third member on your engine stand!

As far as the gears being 3:23, that would be a nice improvement for anyone (like me) that has 2:76 gears. How can I tell if I have a 489 case?

Thanks

You can tell which case you have by looking at the casting numbers on the side of the case. The numbers usually will have a 489.... 741, or 742 in them.

Yeah it works real good. I can rotate it when I need to. Much better when I used to manhandle them in a vise.

Like Captain said it's right on the side of the case, the drivers side to be exact. If you look at my 1st picture you'll see the # 2881489. The last 3 digits are what we always call them by. A 489 case also generally has a big 9 on the drivers side. I also had a 742 case that had a big 2 on it. Not sure if the 741 has a 1 on it, been a long time since I looked at 1.

A couple of the 741s I've seen have a big X cast in the side where the "2" or "9" would be...
