Are the gas caps on early and later A bodies physically interchangeable?
I have yet to see a later cap that fits an early A ('66 and earlier), but I have had to repair several early filler tubes that had their inner diameter beaten and bent out to force a later cap into them.I thought that the 60-66 caps were physically smaller in diameter...
No. 1966 and down had a smaller diameter filler neck into the tank and where the cap screws in. Early caps are major hard to find in good shape. After market chrome locking ones seem to be about the only ones that fit, I think. Are the gas caps on early and later A bodies physically interchangeable?
Not sure what all you’re trying to do, but I’ve thought about this before and was thinking a 67 and up tank should fit a 66 car so long as you change the filler neck too? Then gas cap choice will be easier. Thanks yall. This helps a lot. If I do this mod, it'll just be a little more difficult. No surprises there. LOL
I am going to modify the filler neck for a Dart sport with the fold down seat. It has a SHARP turn down immediately after the fill hole. I believe that might help with the fuel overflow. Not sure what all you’re trying to do, but I’ve thought about this before and was thinking a 67 and up tank should fit a 66 car so long as you change the filler neck too? Now that's what I call a gas cap collection!!!!67-70 interchange. 71 is on its one. 67-70 will not fit a 72-76. 72-76 will work on a 67-70 but will not be clocked correctly. The tabs are narrower on the 72 -76 then the 67-70. The 67-70 will work on the earlier 63-66 bit the handles are different
