Gas tank leaks when filling up

Some background. New tanks inc tank with in tank pump installed at the same time as the 408 and sniper2. Car sat for a couple years after that while getting the sheet metal and interior done so it never got a full tank until a couple weeks ago.

The “leak” leaves a trail about 2 inches wide for a LONG ways and is in the middle of the wheel track. This happens after filling and allowing the pump to shut off by itself.

With premium at (or above) $6 a gallon, wasting a drop is painful. I would guess it is over a quart I lost.

Any suggestions of where to start looking are greatly appreciated!!

Check the sending unit seal. They are notorious for leaking, ESPECIALLY if you used a new metal lock ring. They don't bend the tabs up enough on them to tighten the seal down enough. Simple enough to fix. Just remove the lock ring and bend the tabs up a little and reinstall. That is of course if that's where it's coming from and it probably is.

Don’t know on yours, but lock ring can be taken off and reinstalled without tank removal on a stock tank.

You can also have a look at it to make sure it is tight all the way. If it's not, give it a nudge to tighten it some more before having to remove it and tweak it as RRR noted.

I think @halifaxhops may have some NOS lockrings available. The ones that come with the senders now days are thin junk. They either need to make them aout of thicker material or a thicker seal.

I have the same tank and the EFI tanks do not have lock rings, they are bolted down thru the top of the tank and use AN fittings on the lines. The vent line must be run as high as the filler neck. Check the lines and pump seal gasket for leaks.
