gear ratio

-
You can get a good idea of what you have by jacking up the rear of the car and making a mark on you drive line and a mark on your tire or brake drum. Turn the wheel one full revolution and count how many times the drive line turns. Example: If it spins almost 4 revolutions then you have a 3.91 ratio.

I was told that this will only work on a sure grip/posi unless you can have the cover off or can verify that the ring gear is not turning on a single side rear. Is this correct???

On an open diff it should work too if you can keep the other wheel from spinning. Right?

Keep one wheel still for an open differential, but you will have to let the moving wheel rotate two complete times. So the the drive shaft will rotate 3.91 times while the moving wheel rotates twice. That would be your open 3.91.

THIS

Jack up one wheel only, in neutral, and see if you can turn the tire. If you can, use the above procedure.

If you can NOT turn the tire (in neutral) you have a Sure Grip or some other form of limited slip/ locker

So then jack up both wheels and count the driveshaft for ONE revolution of a wheel.
