Two children were killed here in gun accidents in the last week. One child shot another child and another child shot herself, terrible tradgedies.

If you have kids, remember to keep them in the safe or under your direct control. The fast action single pistol safes or electronic shotgun safes work well for home defense too. My heart goes out to the families, I can't imagine how terrible they feel.

I wish trigger locks would be mandatory.

All this safety bull crap we have to buy in these new cars now yet the guns are about unsafe as they were in the 60;s

I wish cell phones were illegal, pobably save a lot more lives.
Perhaps the gun toters could persuade the cell phoners to
just put the phone down while driving.

The post office here will give you trigger locks for free if you cannot afford them.

Yeah cell phones have messed up the roads, people used to drive through yellow lights, now they slow down for green lights hoping it turn red so they can stop and check their e mail.

I keep a trigger lock on my handgun, takes just a few seconds to remove it. Most times its just sitting in my closet or dresser, why would I keep it un lock were anybody could take it out and shoot me or a love one with it. Oh sure, the lock can be broken off but if that happens well its not my fault one little bit. If I just kept it laying around loaded with no trigger lock and something happen, I would partly blame myself-regardless what the law might say/ gun laws are crazy here in the USA, IMO

Hmmm, never knew that, bout time. Kids can be too interesting at times. I had toy guns as a kid but did not shoot a real gun till I was a teenager and dad was right next to me. Wasn't till I was over 18 I could take the shotgun out alone, I thought my parents were too careful and maybe they were but heck.

Now my brother, ugh I could had killed him once. We had a large piece of private land and he used to go hunting alone with the gun at around age 15, he shot a killed a dog once cause the dog was trespassing.

Heck hes all grown up now and is some pet lover, I should bring it up and remind him of what he did 30 years ago. He was the reason I could not take the gun out alone till I was an adult. I will say thou he never lets his pets run loose. Any homes were miles away at the time, maybe it was a stray dog but who knows. I never seen it, he just told us about it.

Why stop there, why not make Knife Locks mandatory? Unfortunately, you can't mandate common sense. With freedom comes responsibilty, some don't do well with that concept. I suggest they move somewhere where everything is mandated. :director:

If not careful all things will have big brothers hands all over them. I do feel for the families of those children.......but at the same time what kind of parent would leave a gun for a child to find?

I agree Doug, I'm conflicted. First thing I picked up was a gun safe when I was engaged to my fiance since she had a young daughter.

When my neighbors grandkids come over the self defense gun goes in the safe. I have been talking to there Grandpa, who is a hunter, about bringing over a 22lr pistol so we can train both kids on firearm safety. After the spring thaw looks like we will be having a go at it. Of course the kids Dad is dead set against it.....should be interesting to see what happens.....

Consider this. Put someone behind the wheel of a car that has never handled one before and the result will be fatal. Let someone handle a gun that has never done so before and as we all know the results can be fatal. The best advice i can put out there is this. And try and get this very issue across to all you love and want to protect. "Every gun IS loaded until proven otherwise". If you are not familiar with a gun dont say you are just to make someone think your cool. Ignorance can be fatal, it just might be your last act of ignorance.

How about making common sense mandatory?

Guns are AS SAFE as they were in the 60's.

When will people realize that as a gun owner you need to be RESPONSIBLE? I for one, do not want the government to make anything else "mandatory" regarding firearms.

The government is not your mommy. We can not make everything dummy-proof!

(ok, I'm done)

Ya I hide my rifle when my daughter comes to visit. But I also find it hard to keep a gun around if I cant get to and use it quickly if I have to.

Trigger locks are just more leftist nanny laws. i grew up in the country on a farm and we all learned gun safety at a very early age, I never heard of kids shooting each other where and when i grew up. Now if you try to show or teach gun safety, the left makes it look like you're trying to teach your kid to be a murderer. Teach all kids gun safety and you wouldn't have this sort of thing. Us kids NEVER messed with or played with guns because when we grew up, parents were able to discipline you. Now with nanny laws such as we have in Commiefornica, you can't even legally discipline your own kids.

Ok , calm down. Let install throttle stops and governors on all passenger vehicles at 75 mph. We all know that speed kills. We can use " On-Star" to record your speeding via GPS and have them disable your car from a satellite in space. The insurance companies are already working with the auto industry and government lobbiest to make your dreams come true. NOT !!!!!

Don't need Uncle Sam looking over my shoulder. Be safe , be responsible, be a parent...............

Don't get me started, before I get my Gun..........lol

As a gun dealer I can tell you that EVERY handgun that leaves a shop MUST have a lock and a Youth Handgun Safety Pamphlet. Getting people to be responsible is another matter. Firearms are every bit as safe as anything else which requires training to operate ( shoot ). States have differently stated laws which say the same in the aforementioned common sense regarding firearms in houses where children are present. When I had kids in the house I didn't need a law to keep the firearms secured from "innocent" investigation, snooping, "playing", etc.

Ya Can't Fix Stupid ! But, if children are introduced to firearms at an early age and given proper instruction regarding safety then such tragic incidents like Ramcharger posted would be drastically reduced.

My prayers go out to the families of those children.

It boils down mostly to supervision and responsibility. My Son was extremely curious about guns because I had a bunch, shot trap, skeet, sporting clays plus alot of handgun competition. I taught Him how to handle guns properly and bought Him a 12 gauge shotgun for His 12th birthday. Told Him if I EVER caught Him handling it wrong,He'd lose it. He also had access to plenty of ammunition. I would take Him shooting and when He had enough, would sorta force Him to shoot a bit more. This tactic made Him glad to get home , clean the gun and put it away. He's now 36, hunts/shoots and also carries a handgun safely. My Grandson is aware there are handguns and long guns in the house, not locked. He has also been trained/instructed and actually has zero infactuation with them. And that's ok with Me.

In regards to these mass shootings and home invasions, I believe if MORE people(law abiding, not criminals) carried handguns; there would be less public shootings/victums than not. And of course there would be collateral damage but IF someone comes into a resturant and starts shooting at anybody and or everything, I'd like the "chance" of being able to return fire. That's one reason I carry a handgun all the time and people don't even know it, nor would I tell them.

This is why all of mine except my carry are safely locked away. My carry is either on me or next to me on the bed stand (which is 95% of the time,) or it goes in the safe too. The safe was one of the best investments I ever made.

When I have kids I fully intend to teach them about handling guns and how to properly use them.

Knowledge is the best tool you can use.

I couldn't agree more with this post!

I don't understand why people always think its the gun itself that is dangerous. I own many guns and I've never once had one get up and shoot somebody on its own. The only dangerous gun is the one in the hand of someone untrained or a criminal.
I agree that if you have young kids or untrained people in your house that a gun should be safely put away. But if someone breaks into my house I don't want to take the time to go to my safe, unlock it, get the gun out, and take the trigger lock off. By that time it's already too late. But making more laws does not teach the average gun owner responsibility, it only makes it easier for the criminals that could care less about putting a gun lock on their stolen pistol averytime they arent using it.

I grew up in the 50/60's. We had firearms in the house. Dad taught us how to handle them, and none of us were worried about a firearm accident, because we all knew that Dad would kill us for messing with them, when he wasn't around. It's all in the training. Don't get me wrong,I'm all for safety, and I will not have them available for my grand kids to get hold of. If you are going to have guns in a home, with children present, keep them locked up,and put those kids in a hunter safety program as soon as they are old enough. We don't need more government regulations, just more common sense, and responsibility.

I dont even have any children except one 18 at home. All my guns are in the safe except one hidden in the safe closet. By safe closet I mean the one we designated to hide in in case of a break in or someone outside at night trying to get in. I thought it would be better for us to all be together so if I shoot an intruder its not a family member. With doors being kicked in nowadays I dont want every one of them locked up.I like knowing I have one hidden.
