Hello Gang,

Sorry it's been a while since I posted here. I have a question.. I have to have the starter replaced in my '68 Plymouth Valiant. How hard is it to access the starter, is this something I can do, or have the car serviced by my mechanic? Also, what kind of starter is needed. I called around and found one, but I want to make sure that it is the right one for the car. The car has a 273 V8 engine, but it seems that everyone has starters for the 318. Would the starter for the 318 fit, or do I need to get one specifically for the 273? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

Brian T. Carotenuto

318 starter "will" fit no problem. If you don't have headers it should be quite EZ and straight forward..

If you have headers, it could be more of a pain and you may have to remove tie-rod going header to remove starter. Again, this only depends.

Ensure the (+) bat cable is off. "gotta hate sparks"
Safely jack up front of car and remove the electrical connections at the starter. (remember what wires go's where) Loosen and removel the bolts on the starter. (watch your fingers "heavy" little sucker) it should fall right out.
Replace in reverse order.

Too bad it's not a /6. Changing one of those has to be about the easiest starter R&R I've ever done. You don't even have to crawl under the car! :toothy7:

Hello Gang,

Thanks for the replies to my question regarding the starter. I was able to obtain a starter this afternoon. (Heavy little sucker!) I called around and was able to find a remanned starter at a local shop that deals in automotive starters/alternators/electrical systems. I called around this morning to a auto parts shop and the clerk who answered the phone had referred me to the other shop. I called and the clerk there said that I was in luck and he happened to have one left. All said and done it cost me $62. with $7 core charge. The tech at the shop where I picked up the starter had said that there were new 'updated' components that were used during the remanufacture. I have a lifetime warranty with it. I'll keep everyone posted on the install and how the car runs. Thanks again to the group for everything!

Sincerely yours,

Brian T. Carotenuto
