Head gasket intake tabs

Are the tabs supposed to compress down as shown in the first picture when installing the intake or stay up like the second pic? I am not using end seals, but will be sealing with a bead of sealant instead. I was just wondering if they were guides for the ends seals or something. Thanks.

They are to hold the intake gasket up while you drop the intake on. Yes put some sealant in those corners. They won't be a problem once the intake is torqued down. Make sure to use some non hardening thread sealant on your intake bolts and tighten from the center out alternating ends, if that makes sense. Center bolts, the two in front of them to the two in back of them and keep that pattern until you get to the ends.

Some people say break them off, I never have and haven't had an issue.
