A few weeks ago i removed the gauges from my car. when I put it back in I had no power to anything. It finally started working after I took it out and put it back in about 10 times,
Today I removed it again to replace the voltage limiter and again I have no power.
I have 12 volts at the red wire and 12 volts at the black wire so the alternator gauge is good. Everything else is dead.
It is grounded by the 4 screws that fasten it to the dash but nothing will work.
Any ideas what I have done wrong again?
This is a 65 Barracuda so there are 2 wires, the red and the black, the plug that plugs into the back of the gauges and the wire plug to the ignition switch.
thanks for your help.

OK so you are saying that you DO have the ammeter hooked up and the large red and black are both hot?

(You have to have the ammeter hooked up, or the large red and black bolted together to get power)

Where "dont" you have power? The feed from the ammeter goes to the "big splice" in the harness, and from there to the "hot buss" to the fuse box, and the hot lead to the ignition switch.

Do you have power out at the alternator output stud?

It appears on your car that the charging and battery feed come in through the firewall on separate connectors from the "bulkhead connector" so you should be able to double check there for power.

Sorry, I had to run an errand. The red and black wires are hooked to the amp gauge and has power coming in, the red wire and going out, the black wire. I have no lights no power to starter nothing at all. It did this a couple of weeks ago when I had this out. The gauges are grounded by the 4 screws that fasten it to the dash.

If everything inside the cabin is dead, the red and black through the amp gauge is the problem. It could be an open in the amp gauge itself, a bad connection at the bulkhead connector, a intermitent open at the fusible link, etc..
Somehere in the loop shown in the pic posted above.

Thanks for the advice. I guess it will have to wait till after Christmas to check it out. I've got cookies to make and gifts to wrap and candy to make and so it goes. Thats how it is when your wife works and you don't.

I understand all too well. I spent a entire day rolling peanut butter balls and 2 more days dipping those and other concocsions in choclate. 'Tis the season :) Merry Christmas

Great Ben, thats what I have to do today, peanut butter balls and bake cookies. Sounds like with your experiance you could just shoot up the road about 3 hours and we can knock this out and find the car issue also. What do you think, is that a great idea. lol
Merry Christmas and thanks again.

Thanks for all of your help. I just had a chance to check it out and where the first weld or splice was the problem. I removed the tape and could see the black wire had a little movement when I touched the black wire. After a small repair the lights work and the engine fired up/
Thanks again.
