I just bought a 8.75 rear end complete from a local salvage yard. Got a killer deal I couldnt resist even though its not for my exact application.

Heres the deal:

has bolt on axles with wheel studs attached to the drum instead of the axles

the numbers Cast into the 3rd member are

2070741 (I am assuming that it is a 741 case?)
296

from the inside to inside of the spring perches it measures 41.5 inches

from wheel mounting surface to surface is 58.5 inches

aprox 53 inches from axle flange to flange? hard to measure so not sure if that is exact.

has 4.5 inch bolt pattern

My guess would have to be early 60's B-Body?

Also can I build this rear end for my A-body? meaning can I get differnet brakes and axles so that the wheel studs are attached to the axle instead of the drum? have the axle housing shortened and is the 3rd member a good casting? Can I use a clutch type sure grip instead of a cone type (assuming that this is an early 60s rear)

The large castellated nuts on the end of the brake drum are a dead giveaway that it was used up through 64 and probably on a B Body. You need a brake drum puller to remove the brake drum (PITA). I'm on the 62 to 65 Mopar forum (98% B Body)and quite a few people there ditch these rear ends for a 65 - 70 B Body 8.75 for ease of maintenance. Can't answer your other questions.

wow sorry guys I found this site right after i posted this

http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/flats/1549/index3.html

So I have it figured to exactly be a 64 B-body rear end.

I need to know, can i run this under my duster without shortening it, since its only an inch or so wider? And since it has the bolt on type axles can I switch out to the newer type axles? and can I swap on later style backing plates/brake setup onto it?

you should, I have one like it also... Guess i need stupid drum pullers also...its a lil wider and the perches are 1/2 in further out than should be, but someone said you can still run it... If not just move perches 1/2 in in

I figured out that 2070741 means 741 case and the span of years is 1964 to 72

I also found out that 1964 is the last year for bolt on axles meaning that this is for sure a 64 B-body rear based on the dimensions.

I think I will build this rear, now....can I swap out axles and brakes for a newer, non bolt on setup?

yes you will need drums and backing plates to match b body axles 65 to 68 b body

dont you have to cut the ends and change flange ends and run green bearings or adjusters with axles held in by backing plate.

bump anyone?

Yes you have to change the housing tube ends for the cup design for use with either the standard threaded adjuster or install green bearings. Watch you got there is a pre 65 657 rear end housing with a 741 pumpkin which you already figured. The problem is that the 657 rear uses shims to set the axle end play. I'd pull her all apart, measure it all up and figure out exactly what you got. Oh ya, the brake components and axles are scrap.

then do the brakes once not like your going to have to do the brakes every 3 months
