High Volume Oil Pump on stock 318

-
The engine only requires a certain amount of oil flow, anything beyond that is bypassed back into the pan. The stock pump will support factory bottom end clearances plus reasonable wear just fine. LA Mopars were never known for oiling problems (unlike some Buicks for example). If you have one, no harm by running it. But it's overkill and will use a bit more power to operate.

I will be using a HV oil pump....but i'll also have modified hyd lifters too.....so I will need the extra volume to cope.....I'll be using 15W50 engine oil too......with a cooler.

340's had standard volume oil pump with a high pressure spring. That being said, I always ran HV oil pumps on the street with stock pan and HD pump drive, just extra insurance. No problems ever. If you have one already, and you are not a class racer, just run it.

Maybe the hv pump would make a difference on a loose engine...

Ah exactly ,
And indeed its my reason , the engine block that I use in my dailycar has been heavily used during his life (redneck life :sad6:) and suddenly my present oil pressure is at the cost of hv assuredly .

, but on a fresh rebuild ....

logical unstoppable , after a rebuild the "Hv"séries no longer have reason to be for me ....

Now one idea : engine rebuild > oil pump stock > ricer driving (street or occasional strip) ........ i see some people use a driveshaft renforced for security ? (standard driveshaft are bad quality ?)

I think many tracks require a driveshaft safety loop. I've heard bad things happen when you lose a front joint:
My buddy was in high school and saw a girl with a Mercury Cougar do just that, right before a speed bump. The shaft caught the bump and the car did a slow-motion flip onto its roof.

I filtered through all the suggestions and appreciate the responses. I left a message at Melling and actually got a call back promptly. Here is what I gathered from a call from an engineer at Melling. There really isn’t any benefit to using the HV pump in my rebuilt stock engine. A hardened shaft is not needed in a stock engine. He did say if I choose to use HV, I should stay away from heavy weight oils. He never heard of a Dodge sbc suck a pan dry. He said a stock pump is preferred in the 318 but, if I didn’t want to buy one use the HV pump. I don't think I'm taking a chance, if a stock pump works in every other 318, I'm buying a new one. Thanks

Craig

Good decision. I'd use a stock pump too. I've seen many engines go 300,000 miles with a stock volume pump so it must be adequate. And as for sucking a pan dry, I don't believe it's possible either. I think a lot of guys mistake sucking the pan dry with what happens under hard acceleration and the pickup becomes uncovered.

Thats exactly what I was reffering to! Hard launch, non baffled pan and a hi volume pump is a time bomb waiting to go off. Could expose that p/u.

i have a t.r.w. high volume oil pump in my 67 318 have had no problem what so ever with it always carries real good oil pressure & it dont starve the engine out of oil or anything & main bearings look great would not run nothing but a high volume oil pump

No way would I have bought another pump if that one checked out. No harm at all in running an HV pump as long as you use the hardened shaft. The stock pickup cannot move enough oil to suck the pan dry. That's the oldest wives tale in the book.
