How do think this cam will behave in 408 ?

I remember my Dad's 455 Buick when I was a kid, My Dad definitely had fun with that car :)
My childhood friend's dad had a 70 Electra 225 2 door with a 455. That car would literally leave two boiling puddles of rubber in the street.

My short block is finished . Wont have time to pick it up until Monday. It will take me several weeks to get the car buttoned up because I have too many projects and trips planned .

Went to pick up my short block and the machinist aked me what heads Im running . I told him EQ Magnums and he said I can’t becauase my pistons have quench pads that stick .040 out of the hole…urgh…. Did not notice that . So he is going to cut .040 off the pads. Actually works out better be ause I can just run .040 head gaskets and have better quench .
I assumed they were same piston as my W2 408.

He said it probably won’t take enough weight off to have to rebalance for my build but he will check the weight after.
His guess is hp will peak at 5200ish .
If my math is correct, it looks like 0.040" off a third of the piston's area should equate to about 7.5g.

I’m not sure it’s even a third of the piston. It may not even be a quarter.
It’s a third or better but don’t think it will make a difference.
Think of how much oil is on a piston due to windage . I doubt it will make difference on a motor that spends most of its time under 4000 rpm .

My 414 has a Comp 242/250, 106/106 oval track cam, iron heads, Air Gap. Makes torque everywhere. I run a stick with 3.55 gears. No need to downshift, I just floor it. Pulls very hard from my cruise rpm of 2600@60 but is done at 5400. Car is a '71 Duster. I'd go bigger cam than 22*@.050.

Good thread.... i just took my block in for machining for my 408 yesterday and was thinking bout a cam change.. my cam in my 318 is a little larger than this one, so will probably stick with it for now though. sooo much urge to overcam though :) The 16 year old in me will never die...

I know I could make more power with a bigger cam but this is a semi-daily driver . And I am curious to see how a 4” crank changes the behavior of my current cam . A larger cam would also require more stall , a new cam , lifters and maybe springs . Which means I would have to shell out at least another $1500. Like Ive said I have a brutal Swinger 4 sp that fits that description.

Was the block decked?
