I have a 68 dart 318 factory a/c. when I bought the car someone had put a used alt on it so I dont know the stock amps? I need a voltage regulator and all the parts stores are asking how many amps my alt is. Any help would be great. I tried searching with no luck

Some times it is stamped on the top bolt ear, if you post some pics someone on here will be able to tell you.

There used to be two major regulators for Mopars up through 69, and only the pickups and some police, etc, cars ever used the "heavy duty" version. These were square, about the size of two of the common ones placed side by side, which are rectangular

In other words if you don't need to worry

The better replacement is a Standard VR-128 or NAPA VR-1001. These do not look like the originals, but appear the same.

The "more standard" (cheaper) one is a Standard VR-101 or whatever local brand you can get.

The more important question is are you sure the voltage regulator is the problem?

You need to post some photos or nobody can help. It is likely either the original "round-back" type or the later "square-back" type. You car was originally wired for a 1-wire regulator, but that could have been changed. Both types of alternators could have been wired for either a 1-wire or 2-wire field. You might even have a later model alternator. You definitely want to upgrade to an electronic regulator either way, and both 1 and 2-wire types exist. I have never heard definitively that the regulator needed depends on the output rating of the alternator, i.e. that the max field current varies much between them.

As mentioned, it is easy to determine whether the un-mentioned problem is in your alternator or regulator.

Thanks for all the replys. It was the regulator and it is a round back alt. There are 2 wires going to the regulator. I think it was the moron reading into the part wrong cause when I went back in a guy who works there and knows his stuff sold me one and said it should work
