How rare are 273 Commando factory pistons .030 over ?

-
I don't have any pistons that are marked .040. I did post an old thread regarding that for reference. I am joining Rusty. Hey Rusty you and I agree on something! LOL

Yes, you are correct, that thread was by PocketAces .

I did not read the complete thread.
The original 273 pistons (both std, and Hi-po) were cast, and only available in Std, .005, .020 and .040 over size, not .030

The 2 bbl pistons were the same for all cyls. The 4 bbl pistons were different between the odd number cyls, and the even number cyls
"Back in the day", TRW had forged replacement pistons available in several over sizes, including .030.
If needed, I can supply the OEM part numbers, and possibly the TRW part numbers

Yes, only interested in the 4 bbl pistons . I am wondering if the TRW pistons available through Chrysler were available in sizes other than standard and .030 over.

To the best of my knowledge, the TRW pistons were not available from Chrysler. Very possible if you went to the dealer parts counter, and asked for .030 pistons, the parts guy would order aftermarket TRW's for the customer. Back in the '70's I ran NHRA stock elimiator with 2 1965 Valiants, One had a 170 slant and one was a 273. The slant had .020 stock pistons, as NHRA dictated OEM pistons. They did allow .030 oversize, but I could not run them as the factory/parts counter only had std, .005, .020 and .040 available. I cheated with the 273 and ran .030 TRW's.
I will get the OEM part numbers a little later.

I think someone here said and I was also under the impression that the pistons that came stock on a 65 Commando engine were TRW as that is what Chrysler used . Thanks .

OEM 273 piston part numbers for 4 bbl engine.
STD odd bank 2585 267
STD even bank 2585 268
.005 odd 2585 269
.005 even 2585 270
.020 odd 2585 271
.020 even 2585 272
.040 odd 2585 273
.040 even 2585 274

Then there are the 2 bbl pistons, at std, .005, 020, .040, and low compression export pistons at std, .005, .020.
This info is right from the Mopar factory parts manual.

Thanks . So were the factory standard pistons TRW ?

I believe that the standard from Chrysler and the .030 pistons that we've seen here are identical in looks and markings except the .030 mark is on the oversized ones. It's hard to believe that these pistons are not both made by the same manufacturer.

Factory 273 Commando or Charger pistons were cast and never stock in +.030. You have aftermarket pistons.
They look identical except for the .030 marking . Are you saying the stock pistons and the .030 pistons were not made by the same manufacturer . That would be hard to believe .

If you look back thru the many many many build, repair and sales threads as well as tech threads you will see that the original commando pistons do not have that part number on top followed by STD for standard or .030. If you search the many aftermarket sites you will find the part number your pistons have. If you did happen to get old TRW pistons from a rebuild before you owned the block you might luck out and have an old forged set. BUT they are NOT original to that block. Egge, Rebuilders Choice yada yada yada use the L2222 part number.

The .030 over have the L2222N mark on top and I wasn't sure if the Commando stock pistons have that mark ( with the N ) or not but I thought they may have. I don't have a pic of the standard Commando pistons but I think if you would have the standard and the .030 pistons side by side you may think they came from the same manufacturer.
Aftermarket sites do not have the same part number they show L2222 not L2222N.

If there is a clean pic here of the top of stock Commando pistons I would like to see it because I'm not sure of the markings on top of those. Thanks.

original piston top cleaned with out L2222 L2222N or L anything....also does not have the centering hole like yours does because yours is an after market and these are not.

Thanks. I couldn't remember if there was any markings on my stock pistons. I have 2 engines I rebuilt in the shop and I have an engine out with the .030 pistons and markings.

You might have something there. If they are in good shape and you don't use them give me a holler for all this leg work!
Peace out!

All the Mopar pistons I have ever had ,,were stamped with an A -B -C -or-D .
This was in internal code for the bore diameter.
All the blocks after being bored were measured for clearance .
The letters corresponded to a little different size in the piston to fit a little different bore .
All these pistons were standard size,,,and stamped on the crown,,,like this example .
My 273 Commando pistons are really good,,,but dirty .
Out of a factory set of 8,,,,I had 2 Bs,,5 Cs,,and 1 D .

Also,,,,there are some other marks inside the factory piston skirt .
The good ole DCPD logo .
Also these numbers were visible .
2465658
2465661
These numbers were the same on right and left bank pistons .
And yes,,,these are castings !
