This may be a dumb question but I have never dealt much with suspension on my car. I am not happy with the ride height of my 68 Dart GTS and was looking into replacing the leaf springs or getting extended shackles or front brackets to raise it a bit but in considering replacing the springs I always run into the issue of how many leafs the spring has. I can count the leafs but I do not know if you just count the total number of leafs or if some of them are not counted. They are different lengths and there is a very short one on the bottom that I am not sure would count towards the total number of leafs. Does the length of the leaf matter when counting the total number is my question. Thanks for any info.

I always count full leaves and half leaves separately
. My ss springs have six "full" leaves on the Dr side, (leaves extend on both sides of the axle), and 5+2 on the pass side. Two lower half leaves to help absorb the physics of rearend function.

When springs are listed for sale, all leaves are counted. You count all the leaves. Look at the center of the spring pack where the through bolt is and count the leaves.

get the correct springs.

extended shackles or front hangers are a half *** band-aid and lead to poor performing suspension and a car that handles like a coal cart.

...but...but...but...coal carts handle like they're on rails.

Well, sure! But if a couple of those leaves are only half leaves (that are still clamped) I mention that they are halves. Several of the factory suspension packages had half leaves on the passenger side.
Yes, but the factory counts them. If you have a pack with four full leaves and two halves, then you have a six leaf pack. That's how it works. Half leaves and shorter are counted as a leaf. You count everything clamped in the pack.

Actually if you act now you may be able to get ESPO springs. They are filling orders until their stock of components gives out - 5 month wait time. For an A body I always get 6 leaf springs and get them arched an extra inch (+1). I ordered 2 sets last week to put on the shelf...
