Water Reed is where all the seriously wounded troops are sent for repair, So since about 92-93 I started going to a warehouse and getting Levi/Lee jeans and Beffy T shirts and taking them over and giving them to them. I was buying them out of my pocket because it was where I was born and the Hosp had saved my dads' life more than once.

I used my dads parking pass (retired 07) and parked in their reserved circle, then went right into the front door up to the wards.

It worked real well for 2-3 years then some real clown E7 MP told me not to use the GOs parking area anymore to park in the under ground lot.

I moved and keep on coming over with stuff. Lugging the stuff through the garage up the steps to the entrance.

Over the years it got out what I was doing and people would send 2-5-10 bucks to the warehouse for the "old mans giveaway". So the amount of stuff and variety increased and I basicaly was just picking up the stuff and delivering it. (Even little kids send quarters.)

Last night I went over with a load. When I got just past the front gate a guy behind me flashed his lights. I stopped and got out. He got out and asked me if I was the guy giving the jeans and shirts to the soldiers, I said yes I was more or less just delivering it now, it was all paid for by donations. (He was an older guy and did not have his jacket on just his shirt and tie. I could tell he was an G officer by his pants.)

He told me to drive down to the lower entrance and wait.

I drove down to the lower entrance and some E7 came running out the doors and moved the local USA shuttle bus, told me to park there.

Cool, I asked him who the other guy was and he said CG of Walter Reed, park there ANYTIME I came on post.

It amazes me still, that I can be sitting at some dump place eating and when the check comes, it is ZERO, :salute:. Then the waiter or waitress points out a guy or girl that just smiles and waves.

See this country is still GREAT. We just have to cull some of the dead wood....
