how to preserve a gas tank

I have a new gas tank that has had gas in it. How do I preserve it while I restore the car? Will just emptying be enough? It could be sitting for quite a while.

I just drain the gas out of it and then add a pint of either auto trans fluid or MMO (marvel mystery oil) and slosh it around till everything is covered. never had a problem with rust or corrosion

Even Stabil doesn't last forever. I'd pull the tank and do as 66Dvert said, stuff a rag in the filler hole to keep dust and vermim out, and put it up in the rafters of the garage until you're ready to reinstall it. Put the drained gas in whatever you're driving.
