Some drives fail the detection due to some different reasons Del.
Could be a bad electronic part, or even a corrupted drive.

I use a cable like that (a little different design) but the same thing, and I get detection failures like that all the time that a new drive solves.
This may not be in your or your friends plan, but it's the way it is.
I also notice a much bigger failure rate in SATA drives compared to the old ATA style.

One other thing that might help you is that Win8 has a setting in the folder options in the control panel that tells Win8 to "Hide Emtpy Drives" so if the drive looks empty due to file system corruption it won't show up in Windows 8 unless you change that setting.
( It still shows in the logical drive manager though)
This probably isn't the specific problem in your case though, just an FYI.

Once you get passed all the drive issue's you may opt to order an OS disc from the manufacturer instead of trying to come up with a usuable win disc.
