If you are thinking about buying an EV....

-
EVs across the board have the heaviest devaluation at the moment. There is a chance they may recover some resale value once new car manufacturing really feels the pressure of tariffs and go further out of reach of more people’s budgets.

I like EVs. I drove one for a week in 1999. I think it was a modified GEO Metro.
Absolute poopbox, and could only make 65mph on a downhill, but it was fun because it sounded like a subway car, and it just... Went.

From an engineering point of view, EVs are definitely superior. 1 motor per wheel, straight-line transmission, no gearing, no reciprocating parts, all controlled by software.
Compared to internal combustion motors, whose parts are on a mission to destroy one-another, and are only stopped by extreme degrees of counter-engineering, it's no contest.

Would I buy one now? Absolutely, so long as 1.) It was cheap enough, and 2.) It wasn't all connected to every damned WiFi and cellular network in the world (see @318willrun 's recent video).
Since neither of those things is true, I ain't getting one.

I have no problem with government subsidies to any company creating a new technology – that's how China is kicking our butts in pretty much everything now. Their government throws money at new manufacturers, lets them fight it out amongst themselves, and then takes an interest in the winners. China's electric cars, which didn't exist ten years ago, and barely existed five years ago, are now taking over auto sales in most of the world, and the CCP knows the exact location, and daily habits, of every single person who buys one.
Tesla will go down the tubes (mostly because Musk is an A$$hole and drives away customers), and we will have nothing in the market to compete with the rest of the world.

As for mandates, or whatever they are, I don't like them, and I don't think they're needed.
With or without them, as EV technology improves, they will get cheaper and cheaper, and more and more disposable, and ultimately, our gas engines will be expensive, obsolete, and non-marketable. It's an inevitable progression, like going from the horse to the car. Do I have cars? Yes. Antique cars? Absolutely. Horses? Yes, thanks to my wife, I have those damned things, too. And I can tell you from experience that the only amazing thing about the transition from the horse to the car between 1900 and 1920 is that it took 20 years rather than 5. Gasoline engines to EVs will go the same way.

Will we still have our gas engine cars? Sure. We'll be like the Amish trotting along the side of the interstate in a black buggy with a Caution triangle on the back. But everyone else will be cruising past at 100mph with the A/C on, watching **** on their cell phones.

I have ridden in Tesla uber/lyft. Did not know this before. As a back seat passenger my life was at risk.

Tesla doors, including Model 3, Y, and X, have manual emergency releases for when the 12V power fails. Front doors have a mechanical handle in front of the window switches. Rear door manual releases are hidden inside the door pockets, often requiring removal of a mat and a plastic tab to access a cable

I think with out government subsidies
And people realize that ev isn't for everyone
Most auto makers dumping there programs
Ev not going to rebound much ....
One of my customers bought a kia said it was the biggest scam ....they can't make it 250mile round trip to there moms house without a recharge...
Adding 2hr to a 8hr road trip to charge
Stuff like that
When I was at vw / audi training
Its cooling system problems ...
And not many other then dealers will work on them

Actually, the exact opposite is happenening at this point in time.

EV value is dropping so fast, it is no longer plausible for a dealer to buy out a lease because the residual value far exceeds the market value. The dealer then sends the car back to the manufacturer and it goes to auction where it sells for much less, dragging down the retail market value and therefore, the trade-in value.

Also, insurance rates are way higher because EV's represent much higher risk of writeoff if they are involved in a substantial accident and require specially trained technicians and specific equipment to repair them.

Add the higher interest rates to finance these much more expensive cars, the loss of government support (all that did was create an artificial market) and the value lost to technical obselescence and you have the current EV market we are in today.

Ford and Stellantis alone lost 35 billion dollars last year. Porsche, the vehicles with the highest resale value, lost almost 3 billion dollars and are almost bankrupt.

This market is totally unstustainable.

Go get it appraised at any auto dealer so you can assertain its true value , especially if you own it and carry full insurance.

Also, get as much extended warranty as you can if you are going to keep it long term.

Heres a realistic value :

2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive.
Mileage: 70-90,000 miles.

Average pricing new was $69-74,000.00 plus taxes, dealer fees, etc..

Approximate Appraisal value $21000.

Just a heads up... a dc to dc converter for most of these cars is approx $3000.00 to replace and, they go a lot. Dual motor controller and associated hardware ...approx $9000.00 plus install. Another common problem.

Warranty is an area that is almost never discussed when discussing EV's . Conversation immediatly jumps to batteries and their life expectancy
The batteries very rarely cause any problems.

Tesla's warranty is a limited 4 years/50,000miles, after that, you pay as you go.

EV's are extremely expensive to repair no matter what what manufacturer you buy. Nissan Leaf's are pretty much a writeoff as soon as anything breaks and, most salvage yards will not take them as they are worth nothing in scrap value.
People here are forgetting to add in the cost to charge it every day. I have no idea what that is, but it certainly is not free...

Any F*book marketplace ranger in this forum will tell you that old Teslas are $4-5,000 all day long.

Has there ever even been anyone talking about forcing people to drive electric? I have never been told i HAVE to drive one... not sure about the mandate thing...
Nobody was saying that you had to buy an EV, but several states said that after 2035 ONLY EV cars and trucks could be sold new. So if you wanted a gas car or truck in that state, you'd have to buy used. Guess what would have happened to the price on clean, low milage used gas cars??

i would buy one if the prices were better or they gave a lifetime battery warranty.. i drive 12 miles a day, a EV would be perfect for me :)

I would NEVER give tesla a penny though.. Elon is this countries worst welfare queen we have ever had.. and here illegally on top of it.. **** him forever... (not a fan of his)

P.S. I hope Salt batteries become a reality sooner than later.. will make a big difference.
oh boy....musk is not welfare....he has gov contracts lots of them..and he got plenty of kick backs from the gov as well for the stupid elect cars...but that was just our crap fake green gov giving it away..just like ethanol and the dumb *** wind farms that do nothing but put money in chinas pockets..trump stoped the junk elect car cash giveaway....musk has 1000s of american employees...all of them paid very well...you cant say that about the trash from other countries sucking tax payers money by the billions mn ,ca,co,ma,ect............i just got starlink....saving 30 bucks a mo....and no buying or renting just use it...hooked it up in 30 min....no issues at all...my other sat internet was crap glitching all the time.....nope sorry..........when you have done more for this country then elon (and we have not seen anything yet) maybe ill eat my words...........but we both know that will not happen

Yes Elon is a visionary
Space x is the only private space platform that works
Tesla is the best electric car made
His battery tech and charging is what made electric cars even feasible
I just don't like the styling is why I wouldn't own one
Im sure he is an a-hole
But anyone with 1000s of employees has to be
I have 3 and have to be an a-hole sometimes
Heard charging an ev is like having your ac on....mine adds 2 or 300 a month more then I spend on gas

A lady friend had a Prius. I drove it, it would do the required 80MPH on the PA 'Pike but it didn't feel right, tires, suspension, I dunno. Anyway she motored smartly into the back of somebody in traffic and it was totaled. She then bought a Ford C MAX. A WHO? Yeah, I know, me neither! Anyway, a little later, the trans started to leak, she had the extended warranty. She gave the warranty company a call and they gave her the names of approved shops. OK, except there are shops that specialize in EV automatics. A normal shop will not touch one! She takes it to one of the approved EV shops. It's a gasket and gaskets and seals are not covered under the warranty! $3500 to R&R trans and do the gasket. UM, no, she bought a new Honda ICE powered SUV!

I have been watching Jason Commissa on youtube where he road tests a lot of different cars. The LUCID AIR is the fastest car so far I've seen. It blows the doors off super cars and it ain't even CLOSE. No I don't want one but they are STUPID FAST.

Yup!

They are stupid.... err... fast!

But... once you jam them looking for top end or et's, they rapidly heat the EV battery and circuitry and need to go into a cooldown mode. This also soaks up battery charge and may even put the car in "limp home " mode.

My "hands on" experience with them was a recent training course at Barbour Raceway in Burlington, Alabama.

My take, ICE with plug in hybrid is overtaking full EV by a wide margin for a reason.

Go test drive any plug-in hybrid vehicle for yourselves.

You will come away very impressed with the performance without all the drama!

If they stay around , I'll be suprised.

Heres what the scuttlebut is on Lucid...

"....Lucid Group is facing severe financial pressure due to high cash burn and low profit margins, yet it is not in immediate danger of bankruptcy as of early 2026, thanks to substantial, ongoing funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). While the company has enough cash to last until at least 2027, long-term viability remains uncertain, and it faces intense competition.. "

They will not last as the Big Three, Tesla, Porsche, Mercedes , Audi/Volkswagen, Volvo/LandRover are all facing severe financial difficulty due to the loss of investment dollars chasing a collapsing EV market .

Lucid is doomed along with Rivian and PoleStar.

I tried watching a Formula E race once, bored out of my mind after 10 minutes and turned it off.
Did the same thing....and also saw one that ran out of 'gas' lol. How do you do that unless the electronic gauge was ignored.

Here's real world in Canada.

2024 Audi Q-4 E-Tron

New retail price in Canada...... $ 71,000 plus dealer fees and taxes.

Less 5000.00 EV Rebate.

Trade value 32,000.00

Customer took the deal and traded it on a new ICE vehicle.

He wanted out asap as he couldn't believe the rapid depreciation.

though im on the grid..my solar power plant puts out twice of what i need and has for the last 5 yrs.i have a 5 ton and 1 ton ac ..i could charge and drive a ev ..well almost free..kinda....i have thought about one for the wife short runs into town...will i do it....dont think so....the idea of her driving around with a battery that can take out an area the size of 4 parked cars does not sit well..plus...fuel is cheap..as for buying for looks...im to stinkin practical for that..if i think back to all the cars and trucks ive had..most of the time it was right place right time and did i have extra green..truth is...i have little to no attachment to stuff..they have all come and gone..it truly is all about the build..for me..

Wife has a model 3 dual motor. Amazing car. Quiet, comfortable, maintenance free commuter. Had it two almost three years now. Changed one tire when it got a big nail in the sidewall. Other than that, just gotta fill the windshield washer fluid. Come home, park it, connect the charger and good to go for the next days commute. Oh and it will do a 7.20 in the 1/8th!
If I wanted quiet I'd put mufflers on my ICE cars lol
