440 with 512 kit, Trickflow 270 heads, and all the other good parts for my Dodge Dart Drag Car (only). You'll be able to tell that I'm doing this from scratch as a novice, and on a retirement budget.

Ready to purchase my Ignition System. Looked at the MSD 6AL, 7AL-2 and 7AL-2 Plus. I'll need the Ignition Box, Distributor and Coil (and anything else I need), but it looks like there are many other options.

I don't need anything fancy, but would like to get the basic options, control of the launch RPMs, maybe the max full throttle RPMs, and simply have the right Ignition for a 10-second 3,000 pound car without overspending for things I don't need.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,

I plan on running a 6al -2.
I'll see how it works, my friend said it's for a grandma's car but I don't have $1000.00 for better stuff.
I am interested in the 6al plus box too.

You do know it's winter & winter really is a great time to put together a build thread with lots of pictures.
I too am building my dart from scratch, it's been quite the experience, my budget sucks lol.
 
I would keep away from the new MSD systems they have alot of failures. Petronicsx make a similar unit the 510 for 1/4 of the price/ Therer are alot of ways to do this that is just one. And made in the USA! just add a curved for your setup distributor.

I wouldn’t buy a 6 anything.

Never used the Daytona Sensor stuff but I wouldn’t be afraid to use it.

As a rule, you can’t get “too much” ignition.

So buy the biggest you can afford even if you have to do some undesirable stuff to do it.

And if I was going to use an MSD product it would be the digital 7.

Like I said, I see little use for a 6 box from any manufacturer.

I'm just curious. Did you talk **** about the 6 before the 7 came out?

What kind of lifespan do you see out of a 7 box and accompanying / matching coil on the street? I'm just curious because all the manufacturer's info I see on them says not to use them on the street.
 

Msd 6 will work just fine for your car but a 7al2+ would be better (if you can afford it). As far as a coil, a pro power coil is what I would go with. (For drag race only). Just my opinion.

I am useing the 510 set up on my dakota. I think it works great and have Been useing it for over 6 years with no problems

Maybe you use just one coil. I forget how it was being done in the late 1980’s.

Go to 6:00 to look at the spark output of an MSD 6 ignition. The Crane Hi-6S has built in adjustable 2 stage rev limiter and timing retard, too. The Crane system puts out similar spark intensity, it appears to be a whole lot stronger than a factory Chrysler ignition box.

Being that you said drag race only, though, I would run a HI-7.
