Illinois

Mine went up 280 and no new home improvements. I'm at 16 years and would love to leave but I do love it here. Just wish I wasn't so close to St.louis.

I'm from Moline. Grew up just south of Chicago. Moved to Georgia for my job. Recently I'd been thinking of going back to Moline, I still have some family there, but I looked up what property taxes are and have decided against it. I know the town I grew up in has terribly high taxes and the number of abandoned houses is staggering. It doesn't send a good message when people can give up everything and start over somewhere else rather than maintain what they already have.

I grew up in Southern Illinois, West Frankfort in the eighties. I left the State After the downstate "Curley Effect" became increasingly prevalent and the severe economic downturn after of the 90's and 2000's.
I joined the Army and traveled the world for over 2 Decades. I retired to Marion (currently renting) but am Looking to buy a place.
I'm surrounded by 30-50 year old Single Moms with 20x40 and Widowed 60-80 year old women (constantly asking for help) that own 40x60 shops that have been neglected for decades just rotting away.
It really pisses me off to see so many shops and hard work just pissed dilapidated and rusting away.
It's difficult to find a 40x60 garage with a lift,5-10 acres and 1 bed house for sell at an honest price down here.
When I retired I went back to my hometown and there are only 8 or 10 families that I knew growing up. Meth took over the streets. Coal Mines, machine shops, and race tracks shut down.
It was disheartening to see what this place had become after returning after a few decades.
I have a 100% rating for a few service connected disabilities, I get a waiver for property taxes every year.

Sad to hear about conditions of the various areas. We went to Springfirld,IL for a few days and thought the area around the capitol looked deplorable. Not what we were expecting. Glad to hear you get relief on property taxes, just sorry it's connected to injuries. You serve, it should be an automatic discount or free property to build on.

I more than qualify right now. I'm not 'renting' the freakin' land...the house is bought and paid for with a ton of 'sweat equity' included. Why the hell am I still paying (ridiculously high) taxes and having the possibility after all this of having the gov't repo for back taxes if for some reason I fall on hard times and can't pay them?
The Governor was on the news this morning starting a bill so State Farm raising homeowners' insurance rates could be regulated. How about the property taxes under his prevue. We could take toilets out like he did to avoid taxes?

The town that I grew up in the 80's (West Frankfort) passed a city ordinance and policy that allows the town itself to buy properties for 3 years or more of back taxes and resell the property. The council passed this about a decade ago and of course the property taxes shot up to 2.39%(double the national median)
Take a wild guess what happened over that decade, what the town looks like today.. and which families net worths have skyrocketed..
I'm eyeballing Oklahoma, Arkansas, Southern Missouri and Kentucky to permanently relocate and retire.

Wow that's dirty. We can buy delinquent taxes as individuals in Iroquois county but even after you have done it for 3 years you still have to jump thru hoops to retitle it in your name. Some people do it just to get the profit from the delinquent taxpayer in interest. I bought a parcel after it already had went thru the process by one of these companies that buy delinquent taxes. It had originally been a one room schoolhouse on 2.3 acres with a 100 amp service and a septic. The structure was barely standing and was always zoned residential. There were several junk cars there and a school bus. After I bought it the county would not issue me a building permit...I had a realtor friend put it on the market after completely renovating the property and making it into a respectable lot. A tile digger that worked for the county bought it and they issued him a building permit.

Exactly. They won't issue building permits for people that buy, so it ends up going for back taxes again 3 years later, then the town buys it.
So this is a more widespread scam/corruption than I thought.
I learned of this through my realtor who warned me against buying in the county or town.

My real estate tax went up $380.00 since last year. Nothing changed here, and I didn't see any improvement from our government.
Is that ramcharger still sitting basically across from wal mart? Like an 86ish,aroon and white

And this governor is running for a 3rd term and there's always rampant rumors that he wants to be US president /
I can't believe he made it the 2nd term... I never voted for him and won't. But it pisses me off that "Chicago" basically controls the state. Look at the geographic area of Chicago and crook county. That's only one of 102 counties in the state. Even if you include "collar counties" that's 6 of 102. So 96 of 102 counties voices don't mean a damn. Where's the leftover border wall material? Let's put it up along the border of crook county and let them fend for themselves

OK. Can you guys get back to the original discussions and general topics. I don't want to see this moved to N and P.
