Does anyone know what the installed height on a stock pair of 596 heads for a 360 would be? Don't have the ability to measure it right now and I need it so comp cams can match a set of springs to my cam grind.

I just measured a set last week and they came in at 1.687. Different things can affect it though, most of the SB heads Ive had typically go between 1.650 and 1.700

coil bind + .050 + valve lift = installed height

Well I have the valve lift numbers just not coil bind. Would it be safe to assume 1.650 and shim them to match since I've seen that number a lot associated with the stock 360 heads
I'm assuming the length of the valves would also affect this.

damn near everything affects it... if they have machined the spring seat, sunk the valves, longer stems, retainers... it all changes it...
whats the part number on your springs, and what is your valve lift number (remember its after lash)?

That's the problem, I just have a set of bare 596 heads with no springs or valves so I have nowhere to pull measurements from. Lift is .503/.530 with 1.5 hughes rockers.

Most LA small blocks run 1.650, but that's really set by the guy doing the valve job. What does the camshaft manufacturer recommend for springs?

They needed me to give them the installed height for a spring recommendation, it's a custom grind solid flat tappet cam from comp cams.

If you're talking to the normal tech guys, you might want to give up or ask for a manager...lol
What they should be doing is telling you a spring number that will give you the required pressures and at what that installed height should be for that spring to get it where it needs to be. Some springs may want to go in at 1.700. If it was me I'd tell them 1.650 and make sure your cylinder head guy knows that when he does the heads.
