Is Hot-rodding & Hotrods on their way out

-
This thead's title, "Is hotrodding on the way out?" Really?? It evolves, and even thing runs a cycle(s). Been in thge hobby since the 80s and I am 77. Yea I got a late start.

Back in the 60s in rural small town S W Ga. where I was raised, not every HS kid wanted a "fast" car, if they did, most could not afford such, and few kids in HS drove any kind of a new model. Mostly old pickups, hand me down beaters. Couple of kids had a new one, but they had an after school /weekend job. Not every kid was a gearhead. MOst were not even close.

Is the hobby dying??? drove I dont really think so.

So fast forward to today, NOT every person, has a huge interest in classic cars. Just like back then. Just like back in the 70os, when the so called "muscle car" was the craze, not every kid wanted one really. He just wanted a "cool" ride! He usally got a 4 door not cool beater if lucky! And many of the kids from back then, that had a fast car in his early 20s or so, have no real desire to own own today... Usually the guy that wants one now is in his late 40s, 50 and older, that can now afford one, had some "desire" maybe earlier in life, but $ and family was in in the way. Point is NOT every person out there lusts for any kind of classic , not everyone is a gearhead, today nor 50 decades ago!

I say the hobby, has grown remendously since the "musclecar" era started in the 80s. Prices have risen and fell several times. People come and go in the hobby..Some stay till they die.

The models of interest models shift by generation, the supply of "real musclecar" builders keep decreasing. And not everyone is a gearhead!!!! The guy with no desire to build a project, but wants a classic, oif he can afford such, he writes a check!!!!

The hobby actually "started" back in the late 40s after WW11. Soldiers returned home, and a few wanted a ride that was fast, fun, and the Ford model A was cheap, light, could be built out of scrap and junk, if a guy had the desire,,,and so it (the hobby) began. Did every guy want such? No. Most wanted a car to drive that was COOL! Write a CHECK!!!!!! for a not so cool and NOT a classic!!

I did it with my daughter, we had a blast, she was the best co-pilot ever!

Very generous.
Agree with your other statement, if I had a bb 4 speed in high school, dream come true.
I didn't, and without a mentor probably a good thing.

Whatever the hobby, someone out there wants that connection, needs it.

We meet more genuine people, interested in a conversation, driving our junk to the grocery store than to a car show.

They're out there, just not the majority.
We did it in the Jeep cause the car wasn’t (still isn’t) done yet. But he had a total blast and was disappointed we couldn’t do this year.

Must be those girls with dirt under their toe nails and hair on the legs. lol
I always preferred they look good, smell good, taste good and be lady like.
The search ended 43 years ago, wouldn't trade her for nothing.

speak for yourself. i never had no problems...

*brushes off shoulders*

besides, i didn't want nuthin' to do with the gals that didn't like the vague waft of "automotive" essence.
Yeah, just makes showers more fun

Brake bleeding and flat towing skills.

Bonus.

Highly appreciated, though.

Yep & hot rod power tour and drag week both just had record numbers in attendance and participants.
I've been on power tour in '09 and '10. I've looked into it the past 2 years and damn at 58, they've priced me out of having hope to run one again

I'm getting in to this thread a bit late but I can tell you kids/young adults are in the hot rodding scene, just not what we consider hot rodding. There are a ton of JDM car clubs and import builders out there. My son (26) has been exposed to classic car shows and what we typically call hot rods his whole life and when he wanted to build something it was tough but we found his Dart and he and I had a great time building it. About the same time when he built the Dart, he was 16 at the time, he also was interested in the Mazda Miata! Like most of you are doing as you read this, I laughed uncontrollably and said a bunch of things that would get me banned on the site! So we build the Dart and have a great time and fond memories and it's his driver for a bit. A few years pass and a friend is going through a divorce and has a N/A Miata. He ends up giving it to my son and he and I start messing with it. The Dart is more of a weekend car now and the Miata is his daily driver. Since then, my nephews and my son's friends have built a few, doing the same crazy stuff I did with my friends as a kid, blowing up motors and racing and running to the junkyard for parts. Funny part is he and I just bought another one that we are building and I'm using it as my daily driver, 25 mpg verse my truck 10 mpg, and we are having a great time doing it. We do junkyard runs and look for parts on Offerup and Craigslist etc. We have a lot of fun and it's our thing. That's what it's all about.

My point is the kids or next generation of Hot Rodding is just different that we think it should be. No longer is it a 57 Chevy or a 69 Challenger but now it's a N/A Miata, Lexus IS or a Infinity G35. They are building them and having meet ups and there are clubs out there. It's just different that what most of us have in mind. And most of us, don't like it. It's the lowered, stanced out car with a turbo and a big wing that is being built. It's not wrong-it's just different. I remember my Dad yelling at me for taking the A/C out of my 69 Camaro and building a nitrous motor and he just scratched his head in disbelief. Like that, the next generation of car builders are not building what we think is hot rods but what they like and can afford.

The attached pic is the day we picked up our newest project.

yup. hit the nail right on the head there.

Who says kids aren't into cars anymore? Killer stance dude.....

Oh and some dopy kid next door to me has a 4 door Corolla momma bought him. He put a fart can exhaust on it and wide open throttles it every time he leaves. Not my taste but kid is a car enthusiast.

My son who was 16 when he found this. Total wreck. Paid $500.00 for it, and He cut his teeth on restoring it. He is carrier Air Force. So its been mostly sitting in my garage.. He finally took it home a few weeks ago. His now 17 year old son has been into cars for a while. His 14 year old is more or should I say, was your average 14 year old today . Face in his phone or computer all day. Until his first ride in it. He is an old car junkie now.

My son's white '95 Civic coupe with a 2.4L engine swap, Accord 5 spd swap, custom ECU, all new AC, and fully restored as father son project. Daughters black '93 Civic Si hatch. I did rust repair and body work on both Civics but sent out for base clear coat. And no I did not use chicken wire and bondo I butt welded new metal in.

The white civic entire underside striped and repainted car had heavy surface rust underneath along with extensive rust in rear quarters. That was our biggest car project to date.

Really? I mean sure if you get the platinum package. But I did the whole tour for less than 700 bucks. We stayed in a tent some nights, others, cabins at state parks nearby. Usually in the 30 -50 bucks a night for the cabins: 20-40 for the tent sites.

It's making people lazy. I still say that it's going to be one of the down falls of our country. Do kids really learn in school anymore? If they don't know a answer to a question they don't research it out instead they pull out their cell phones or lap tops, it's sad very sad.
Ok kazinsky. Is looking up info on a computer or cell phone not research, instead of a book? I understand what your saying but let's move on into the 21st century. Do kids really learn in school, well that's highly dependant on their upbringing. Both my kids are in college, one is going for a PhD in mathmatics to be a college professor himself, and also teaches coding to other students. The other is going into psychiatry. Are any of my kids friends shooting for the moon? No, but that's ok they will find their path in life. My wife works at a grade school, and 3/4 of these kids have no chance in hell when you hear or see how they are raised, and also kids basically can no longer be disciplined by the school for acting out.

All this from a recovering dumbass plumber with bipolar who would ingest anything in front of him to have a "good" time, who thankfully met a woman who could whip me in shape.

I think you live in a bubble and really have no idea what's going on.

That's one badass ride!

Your kids are of a very few. Most can't count change, tell time unless it's a digital clock, read past a 7th grade level, and can't even write or read a letter, write a check, handle money, I think that I explained it to you
I’m home schooling mine this year for this very reason. You’re not wrong here

They charge you to participate?
They charge for 5 venues, they pay hundreds of employees, they give you swag, there's activities and junk, connection to inexpensive hotels, and something else I'm forgetting.

It was $225 last year for 2 people, that's $112.50 per person, $22.50 per person per venue.

Our local track charges $35 per person.

Spectators are free at all venues.

And the best part is the Tour.
Thousands of vehicles cruising to sites, eats, gas stations, hotels, cruising at night, etc.

I think this guy said it best.
And this guy's daughter had the best time ever and she's one of those non-existent young old school motor heads, who not only can drive, but the first car she ever drove was this bb 4 speed.
And, no, she didn't stall it.

Do they still have sponsored dinners at some of the stops? When I went in 2005 there was 2 dinners and I believe 2 or 3 lunch stops provided by event sponsors if memory is correct. Pretty sure one of the dinners was put on by Painless Products. I only made one of the lunches, it was at J.C.Whitney I think.
Had planned to do all of them, however my buddy’s GTO was having issues over the first 3 days. Fortunately we got everything sorted out and we both made the Long Haul.
