My wife loves our vans..... so do I :) The youth likes them too....

I graduated from Francis Howell class of '78. Those were the days without a doubt.
I am SOooo old, my school, 1st grade thru HS did not even have AC or screens on the windows! But we did have indoor plumbing and they served lunch. 25 cents per day! The principal dished out free "behavior" corrections with a 3 foot long "paddle" 1 inch thick. He said, take out your wallet, hold onto my desk, and I will see how far I can lift your *** off the floor". Usually about a foot or so.
I remember it like yesterday, I must have a good memory for 77 years old? Or am I 87?? Don't remember. :BangHead:

Well, aren't they? Back when our nephew was in school a friend of his took the family spare car to school which only was a $85,000 BMW, poor kid, probably was embarrassed to have to take the spare bimmer to school.
don't make blanket statements, lest you get covered up too, dan.

there's always been rich people. that's the way of the world. when i was in highschool Jason got a new lexus and i [checks notes] was driving a 63 galaxy 500 with police interceptor 390 which by everybody's reckoning was "an old piece of ****".

[editors notes: it was not a piece of ****]

Do they still have sponsored dinners at some of the stops?
Not sponsored, or paid for by a sponsor.

They have recommended stops, sites, eats.

Forgot to mention, people/communities pull out all the stops and come out in droves.

From individuals sitting on their zero turn mowers waiving as you drive by, to car clubs having shows along the route, to my favorite, family had a party on the route, they had a sign and guys were throwing bucket of water on the road for impromptu burnouts!

I'm sure there have been cutbacks, as with literally anything in this world.

The core remains the same, car nuts getting together.

This thead's title, "Is hotrodding on the way out?" Really?? It evolves, and even thing runs a cycle(s). Been in thge hobby since the 80s and I am 77. Yea I got a late start.

Back in the 60s in rural small town S W Ga. where I was raised, not every HS kid wanted a "fast" car, if they did, most could not afford such, and few kids in HS drove any kind of a new model. Mostly old pickups, hand me down beaters. Couple of kids had a new one, but they had an after school /weekend job. Not every kid was a gearhead. MOst were not even close.

Is the hobby dying??? drove I dont really think so.

So fast forward to today, NOT every person, has a huge interest in classic cars. Just like back then. Just like back in the 70os, when the so called "muscle car" was the craze, not every kid wanted one really. He just wanted a "cool" ride! He usally got a 4 door not cool beater if lucky! And many of the kids from back then, that had a fast car in his early 20s or so, have no real desire to own own today... Usually the guy that wants one now is in his late 40s, 50 and older, that can now afford one, had some "desire" maybe earlier in life, but $ and family was in in the way. Point is NOT every person out there lusts for any kind of classic , not everyone is a gearhead, today nor 50 decades ago!

I say the hobby, has grown remendously since the "musclecar" era started in the 80s. Prices have risen and fell several times. People come and go in the hobby..Some stay till they die.

The models of interest models shift by generation, the supply of "real musclecar" builders keep decreasing. And not everyone is a gearhead!!!! The guy with no desire to build a project, but wants a classic, oif he can afford such, he writes a check!!!!

The hobby actually "started" back in the late 40s after WW11. Soldiers returned home, and a few wanted a ride that was fast, fun, and the Ford model A was cheap, light, could be built out of scrap and junk, if a guy had the desire,,,and so it (the hobby) began. Did every guy want such? No. Most wanted a car to drive that was COOL! Write a CHECK!!!!!! for a not so cool and NOT a classic!!

Agree Barbee!

All one has to do is research the number of the Shops/businesses restoring/modifying old and new cars and trucks these days.

Most have a 1-2 year waiting list! And its not all Hemi Cudas or Yenko Camaros

I'm in Eastern Canada and all the well known shops are fully booked for the next two years!

surprised it only took 5 pages to get to the: these younger kids couldn't handle [blank], they're all soft and entitled. blah blah blah

*makes jerking off motion*
When I was young we walked to school. Worked a job. And Rode out to a kids house named Dan and put 3x5 index cards in his mailbox saying he never had a bike. Things were hard back then.
No fancy computer stuff back then

I understand what you're saying, but what does it teach them?? I know a few people who have money and a couple of them are jerks as they think they are better than others when actually they are not. Some kids today couldn't handle the way I and possibly yourself grew up as they want everything right now and it has to be the best. Am I right??
the circumstances are just different

every generation had its difficulties; just as you didn't have to mine coal or work in a cotton mill as a pre-teen, i didn't have to go war against my will. the current generations face their own adversity and have different hardships, so dismiss them out of hand is extremely short sighted.

and for the record, i know a lot of adults that fit your description of wanting everything right now and it having to be the best. so don't be trying to play that bullshit card.

Are you saying that I want everything right now and that it has to be the best?? If so, then you don't have a clue.
lot of good that high school of yours did. your reading comprehension is like a 7th grader. but i guess things were different back then. tougher.

When I was young we walked to school.
uphill both ways! in the snow! with newspaper in our shoes!

Worked a job.
in the coal mine, second shift was at the cotton mill!
And Rode out to a kids house named Dan and put 3x5 index cards in his mailbox saying he never had a bike.
you mean you piloted your pennyfarthing?
Things were hard back then.
No fancy computer stuff back then
don't complain! your family had a radio! all we had to listen to was the neighbors arguing and the train going by on the tracks!

Subscribed! Talk about school, back in the day, Both of the people that were involved in a tussle were disciplined. No choosing sides for the teacher or principal. Like they said, "it takes 2 to Tango" Your choice fellas. Fair warning to stop the BS. "
Damn right and don't you forget it"

Grade 4 they were renovating our school so both grade 4 classes were bused to another school for the year. It also had two grade 4 classes so it was inevitable there was some scuffle, snowball fight every break. Pretty much every recess and lunch the PA would come on and two or three of us boys from both schools grade would get called to the office, lectured by old Mrs. White, followed by a few ruler lashes to the hand. Best part it rarely was the kids involved. We just took one for our team... and let's face it, we all deserved it.

One of the best parts for me was seeing all of the people who were lining the streets of all the small towns getting out and watching/encouraging burnouts, etc.
I also really enjoyed the route that took us down the secondary highways instead of the interstate highways. Far more scenic.

I'm getting in to this thread a bit late but I can tell you kids/young adults are in the hot rodding scene, just not what we consider hot rodding. There are a ton of JDM car clubs and import builders out there. My son (26) has been exposed to classic car shows and what we typically call hot rods his whole life and when he wanted to build something it was tough but we found his Dart and he and I had a great time building it. About the same time when he built the Dart, he was 16 at the time, he also was interested in the Mazda Miata! Like most of you are doing as you read this, I laughed uncontrollably and said a bunch of things that would get me banned on the site! So we build the Dart and have a great time and fond memories and it's his driver for a bit. A few years pass and a friend is going through a divorce and has a N/A Miata. He ends up giving it to my son and he and I start messing with it. The Dart is more of a weekend car now and the Miata is his daily driver. Since then, my nephews and my son's friends have built a few, doing the same crazy stuff I did with my friends as a kid, blowing up motors and racing and running to the junkyard for parts. Funny part is he and I just bought another one that we are building and I'm using it as my daily driver, 25 mpg verse my truck 10 mpg, and we are having a great time doing it. We do junkyard runs and look for parts on Offerup and Craigslist etc. We have a lot of fun and it's our thing. That's what it's all about.

My point is the kids or next generation of Hot Rodding is just different that we think it should be. No longer is it a 57 Chevy or a 69 Challenger but now it's a N/A Miata, Lexus IS or a Infinity G35. They are building them and having meet ups and there are clubs out there. It's just different that what most of us have in mind. And most of us, don't like it. It's the lowered, stanced out car with a turbo and a big wing that is being built. It's not wrong-it's just different. I remember my Dad yelling at me for taking the A/C out of my 69 Camaro and building a nitrous motor and he just scratched his head in disbelief. Like that, the next generation of car builders are not building what we think is hot rods but what they like and can afford.

The attached pic is the day we picked up our newest project.

See him and his Miata at Miguel’s all the time! Tell him TT5.9 says hi.

Not in my schools, all fights were finished in the gym on the mat. Gotta love the 70's.
Smear the gear? and bombardment always generated some good brawls.
