Is this bad for rebuilt transmssion??

I was having issues getting my new engine to run, and today I finally got it going! but, I was so worked up about the engine I forgot about the tranny.

I let the engine run for the initial start up for 20 minutes, and forgot to check the tranny fluid. I also started it in park instead of neutral like was suggested to me.

There is about 2 quarts that I know of in the tranny, do you think I may have screwed something up by not checking the fluid, and not starting it in neutral?

I didn't put it in drive or anything, just let it in park. I am letting the engine sit for 24hrs, and then tomorrow I was going to run the car, and check the tranny fluids.

You don't think the pump blew out or anything would yea???

The park/neutral thing shouldn't matter…. As far as not having any fluid in it…. Fill it and see if its OK….. It will be or it won't.

It all depends on how much fluid you have to add to get it to the full mark. Make sure you do the final check with the tranny in neutral and tranny hot. I usually put 4 quarts in without the engine running then start it and while it's cold add oil just until you see it at the bottom of the stick (tranny in neutral). Go up and down through the gear a dozen times then top it off to the bottom of the stick again wait for it get hot before the final top off.

hmm... For some reason I was told to start the car in neutral because it would than fill the torque converter quicker... in park it could burn up quicker because it would heat up faster with no fluid in it.

Is that the wrong info?

That info is correct unless you have a Trans-go kit in it that includes a modified manual valve which it allows fluid flow in park. Either way even if it did have the Trans-go kit running it with only 2 quarts of fluid in it sure wasn't good on it. Sorry to say. But what's done is done so just fill it with fluid and see how it works. More than likely it'll work ok. You just took some life off of it. If you do one again put at least 4-5 qts. in it before you start it.

I drove it down the block, open headers! it shifted fine. However I checked the fluid again when I came back and it wanted another quart! I added 5, would it take 6?? At least I know it shifted in all three gears.

They usually take 7 or 8 if their dry. All depends on the torque converter size, and if you have a deep pan and a aux. cooler.
