I installed a new p/s box on mt 67 barracuda. All i did was i removed the alternator, dropped the steering, and unhooked the lt header. I went to take it for a test drive and it will not start. It turns over and getting fuel. I have a MSD box, coil and distributor that are all new. I cant find any loose or unplugged wires. I checked and i am not getting any spark to the plugs or from the coil.

When you dropped the steering did you inadvertently allow the ignition lock wiring to come loose.

on mine it runs from column up to the main in car loom, clamped into the dash box
53 years old loom, no give, no flex the wrapping has been "baked by the sun" in there.

sounds like you have power to the stater in the start position.
but a problem with power to the coil either in Start or RUN

does the accessory power work ie dash lights radio etc?

You are suffering similar to what i did on the day i disconnected my ignition lock wires and then in the darkness of a "head in the footwell" situation realized that it had been repaired with all 4 wires the same colour., and that it should have 1 single connector not 4 individual bullets. A good few combinations tried before all wires back in the right place; Of course the switch isn't labelled, they expect you to use the colours of the switch wires. so even though easy to ID 12 Volt wire to go into switch which connector wire on the switch should it be on...etc repeat for the other 3 wires.

ebay photos of second hand switches to the rescue

It turns over and getting fuel
That shows the STARTING cir is functional.

Did the car start and run before the steering gear change with the new components?

67 only has a NSS that would prevent the car from cranking. No other interlocks.

Now the fun begins...

You are going to have to trace back from the coil positive the rout the power goes all the way to the battery or the first point you do have power along the route.

You are going to have to trace back from the MSD box positive the rout the power goes all the way to the battery or the first point you do have power along the route.

I'm assuming you loosened the steering column and moved it some amount. The power to feed the coil basically goes as follows.

  1. Batt positive to starter relay post.
  2. Starter post to fusible link
  3. Fusible link to bulkhead connector
  4. Bulkhead connector to ammeter
  5. Ammeter to main splice
  6. Main splice to ignition switch
  7. Ignition switch to IGN 1 (run) and IGN 2 (Start) (because you can crank the engine we know you have power to the ignition switch)
  8. Now you need to check that you have power to IGN 1 with the key in the run position, go under the hood and locate the ballast resister that you may have bypassed to add the MSD box look for blue with tracer that is IGN 1 and with the key in run should have power.(No power there look at the bulkhead connections "N") And the IGN 1 terminal on the ignition switch)
  9. Now you need to check that you have power to IGN 2 with the key in the start position, go under the hood and locate the ballast resister (that you may have bypassed to add the MSD box) look for the brown wire, that is IGN 2 and with the key in start that should have power. (No power there look at the bulkhead connection "Q") And the IGN 2 terminal on the ignition switch)
  10. As I stated before you need to also trace where you are getting power to power the MSD box I have no way to know where that is coming from.
  11. Then you need to go to the coil positive and see if you have power there in both run and start.
It's a lot of work but it has to be done

With an MSD box, the coil positive wire will not be powered, but you will want to check for 12v on both MSD red wires with the key in both run and start. The box should spark if you tap its white wire to ground.

Now the fun begins...

Correction Dana. He has an MSD THREE IS NO power to coil +

On that note make CERTAIN that the ONLY TWO wires to the coil are the two wires from the MSD box. No tach, and no radio supression cap

Your MSD should have a large black, must be grounded, and a large RED, must be hot power all times.

The thing that 'triggers' it on/ off is the small red, should be tied in with the old "run" power AS WELL AS the bypass circuit, the old brown that formerly connected to the coil + side of the ballast.

I agree that the most likely problems are inside with your ignition switch wiring, most likely damaged or disrupted when you had the box dropped.

You can temporarily fire it, by checking that the MSD large black and red are properly wired, then find the small red, and jumper that to battery, see if it will fire and run

yes the car started fine before the p/s box change all i did was unbolted the steering and pulled it back just enough to get it off the box splines i havent had time to look into it im hoping some time Saturday
